View Full Version : Ever used A/C Filters?
I've heard some people use black Air Conditioning filter as sponges in canister filters and sumps. Does anyone have any experience with working these? I've noticed somewhat of a "strong" petroleum scent to them.
Would anyone recommend boiling prior to use?

theres so many already tested methods than this why risk it.. you dont have to keep changing sponges you buy one for your canister and squeeze it out in a bucket of tank water and reuse it

You have to be really careful and do a complete investigation of all materials before you even consider using it.
What is the base material?
Does it have added treatments like a tackifier or anti-bacterial?
It's not worth the risk to use anything you're not certain about.

You can purchase the blue/white bonded pad from Grainger under then name air handler but purchase it without tackifier.
For sponge here is a source that I bookmarked after learning about it but I have never personally used.

Many of us either use Poret or have bid outbid at an auction trying to obtain Poret Foam...

I would not use it. Especially that you noticed a "strong petroleum scent" in this product. I am all for finding "safe and economical" products and ways to save in this hobby. But some things are just not worth the risks.
