I was thinking of trying something different, like a nano planted tank. I have a 5.5 gallon tank sitting around I could use.

Anyone setup up a nano tank? While I've keep plants successfully in the past it seems like a challenge. Any and all suggestions welcome.

What plants? Would you add fish? I'd probably do it if there was a particular plant I wanted to try that needed special conditions and pampering thinking in a 5G it would be easier, LOL!

I was thinking actually of easy plants to start with. Java fern or moss.

Maybe try some killies or microrasboras for fish. Tom's scarlet badis looks like a nice fish for a small tank.

One thing to watch out for is to much light on a 5.5g low tek tank. I wouldn't put more then a 15w 6500k light over it. The fern would work nice but slow as all he!! to grow. Mosses (there a ton of type's) will work to but if they end up growing like the stuff I have in my 30 you will be trimming a lot. There are some nice Anubis (sp?)that stay small that would work out well too. Use a high quality sub made for planted tanks.
As for fish Endlles are small but have a real neat color to them and breed like mad

I would not put Endlers in that small of a tank unless all males (and then might have some agression issues even with just Endlers) as they breed way to much/fast. The micro rasboras might be a good choice though. Of course for that small of a tank a single male betta could be an option as well. I started with a ten gallon tank which may not technically be "nano", but I think to play with some easy care plants this is a good size small tank to try.

I was thinking maybe galaxy rasboras, they stay small.

i have a 2 1/2 planted hex i use for growing out my killies . includes java moss, small java ferns.water sprite, eel grass, bannana plants and small pieces of hornwart,.do not use carbon this will absorb alot of nutrients from the water that your plants need to grow efficiently, plants do well with small doses of liquid iron, that you can buy at most pet shops, and add when doing water changes, believe it or not i use a 25 watt daylight compact flourecent (sold at any home improvment store) for my lighting ,and works well with the species of plants that i keep in this tank

how many hours a day do you keep that light on for? Are you using any co2 additives with it?
