i think that the calvus has a sleeker bottom jaw, more like a bullet whereas the comp. has more of an angled bottom jaw. i remember reading that somewhere so don't quote me on it..........

Try to get a picture of the mouth area so that one can tell whether it is a comp or a calvus.

Looks like a Calvus as well. Also looks like it can be a little stressed out, at that stage, Calvus/Comp colors are more vibrant. Is this a dom male? What else is in the tank with it?

Not sure but,,I think Flareside used to have a White Calvus that would turn blackish/greyish in color when stressed or picked on. Or was it a Black Calvus that would turn whitish in color?? Flareside,,,you see this???

my white calvus would darken considerably if stressed- or when I added black moon sand

IMO this is definitely a calvus. Comps aren't spotted like calvus are. Body isn't deep enough, also.

I was just talking to Steve this morning about calvus, and tho I've imported lots of them, bought and bred twice as many more, I would be hard pressed in some circumstances to identify most calvus. I've had inkfins that paled at times so much that even their pectorals weren't dark, and whites that were so highly contrasting in colors that you'd think they were blacks! Only my yellow calvus are usually fairly consistant in color... or at least in having some yellow color.

My guess would be just a shot in the dark. Color depends sooo much on mood, substrate, food quality, water quality/color, that without seeing it in person, I have no chance... sorry

My initial thought was Comp . As far as the pearl's mean's calvus isn't a great indicator, so I looked in Koning's yellow ( in their natural habitat) book copyright 1998. On page 87 their are eight comp's of them 3 are pearly. In addition comps are much more likely to have black bar's that are split in half with a white stripe. By what I see I'd say it's a comp from Katoto, Zambia.

check out Kipilli in back to nature Tanganyika. It is white and pearly.

Look at it's head.... comps have scales on the front part of it's head. Calvus do not.

I was waiting for a better picture.... but you can probably tell easier since he's in your tank. That is really the only real difference between calvus and comps... scientifically at least. Spots.... color etc mean nothing.

It looks like a "Black" compresiceps. I have a tank of breeders, and a tank of
2" fry.
Thanks,
Daniel

I don't know, they were sold to me as WC A. calvus, and while they had some spagels like the A. calvis the body shape was all A. compressiceps. I had them confirmed as A. compressiceps by Ad Konings at the 2004 (or'05) ACA convention when one of my males won the lamprologus class.
:crutch:
I love this smile, it looks like me after my two back surgeries!!!
Thanks,
Daniel
