Well for emperor cichlids, you'd want a minimum 10ft tank, minimum 5ft wide, and minimum 4ft tall... That is if you want to them to live to their full potential and full size :-)... Personally I'd love to give that a try one day if I ever live in a house giving me the space to do it and I have the money of course to build and run it...
Anyway the biggest I have seen at someones house was my own, a 265g (haven't been to many hobbyists homes!). The biggest I've seen in a business was at Baltimore National Aquarium... I don't know the sizes of theirs but they have three tanks there, about 20ft tall each I am estimating and probabaly 200-300ft long, and no idea how wide they are (you walk down a winding ramp to see all of them, and the tanks are shaped as ellipses so they completely surround you...).
I know at the Okinawa Aquarium in Japan they have a 1,981,290 gallons saltwater tank housing SEVERAL whale sharks... (Georgia Aquarium has a larger tank with whale sharks too, but the Okinawa Aquarium also has a huge artificial coral reef) If I ever visit that part of the world again I am definitely stopping there! Oh, and the tank is 8.2meters tall and 22 +/- meters long...not sure how wide it is... Here's a photo:
Okinawa's Whale Shark Tank, ~2 million Gallons:

Atlanta, Georgia Whale Shark tank, worlds largest, about 6 million gallons:

I haven't seen it in person but I know a guy up in Canada has a 50,000gallon aquarium with Arapaima gigas in it, among other Amazon giants...

265 is the biggest I have seen personally in someones home.
I know of someone in Hawaii that has a 400g tank full of Mbuna and it is kept outside.
As far as businesses there is a Japanese restaurant here called Sawa that has a tank full of Mbuna that is at least 10ft long. Not sure how many gallons it is but Met. Estheraes dominate it.

Largest freshwater tank in a home - 265 gallons. Largest saltwater tank in a home - 400 gallons. Just recently I saw a 2,000+ gallon tank in a restaurant in Hackensack Children's Hospital. Today I saw a nice 10 foot freshwater tank in Royal Car Wash in Wayne, NJ. This tank houses some of the nicest Malawians (huge fish) that I have seen anywhere. There is also a spawning pair of lamprologus brichardi with fry in the tank. Really amazing to see the pair defend their fry against much larger fish. The fry do survive, as there were many one inch juvenile brichardi amongst 7 and 8 inch mbuna. There is also a large frontosa in the tank, but he doesn't look very happy.
