I wanted to try a Hydro-sponge "Pond 3 or 4" as prefilter for my Fluval 404 and 405 series canisters. The sponge seems to have the same pore size as the "Hydro-sponge Pros". Ive had such great results with prefilters on my aquaclears and Id like to know if anyone has tried these.

I've used the Hydro Sponge III filter on one of my small ponds. Works great. Same pore size as the pros.

I may try one of those. Does it make a big difference?

I use the penguin powerhead reverse-flow replacement sponges for prefilters on all my canister and hob intakes. Cheap, easy to clean with weekly partials, and coarse enough that they don't clog up too quickly between cleanings.
+1 on prefilers - especially in tanks with fine sand or on canisters. I just use old AC sponges with a hole punched length-wise done the middle. They don't take up as much room and seem to blend in better, BUT - they clog up faster....
