To me it looks like an exceptional male Acei. Finnage is show quality and great color probably in spawning mode.

Looks just like one of the large males I got from atlantis a year ago.

I still say that this species should be reclassified

To me, the finnage looks like more of a peacock type of thing rather than a pseudo. My acei doesnt have the long fins

But there are Ps. acei species from different locals. All the same but slightly different color variances. Some specimens have better genetics than others possibly producing better fins or better color. Selective breeding may have a part in that also, best female mated with best male. A lot of aquarium strains come from this breeding. That photo is male that has not been picked on and is probably 'King of the Ring'. I think it just has a good quality blood line and a good habitat.

Fish are not classified by their fins. There are many factors involved in classification. Diet, habitat plus a bunch of physical characteristics are used to classify fish. For example, teeth, the number of rows of scales, etc. Acei are herbivores. Peacocks are not. That just a good looking acei.

Wasnt meaning to imply that fish were classified simply by their fins as I already know this is not the case. As you stated there are a number of factors that are considered when species are classified or reclassified however, Appearance and traceability to their ancestory is one of them. That's why I said they had a different body type/finnage than most other species of Pseudo. They also prefer the upper water column which is more in line with the similar looking peacock as opposed to the lower rocky cover that pseudo's typically crave

In fact, if you do the research, many cant agree that the current classification of many genus's of many popular cichlids is correct. Classifying and reclassifying and naming cichlids is sketchy altogether.,

Pseudotropheus means "false tropheus", hell no kidding that was one smart biologist! Not even from the same lake...

Tropheus comes from the greek work trophos - to nurture. The biologist who named them probably found a female with a mouthful.
