Hi guys, I just recently stripped about 50-60 lab/acei fry for the first time. They're all very lively and eating well in a 10 gallon tank,I was wondering at what size do I move them to a 30 gallon grow out tank I have waiting ?.

I would move them asap if you are feeding them 2-3 times /day. 50-60 fry are a lot in a 10g. Larger tank and frequent water changes means less chance of waste build up and faster growth.

I guess everyone knows how old they are except me,do you mean in the last week? (recently??)
Putting that many fry into a 30 gallon tank is a bit excessive unless they are over a month old.
Personally I keep most broods in a 2 1/2 gallon tank until they seem to fill it up,sometimes keeping them there for the first month, depending on brood sizes.
I would think that keeping the amount of fish you mention in a 10 gallon tank until they are at least 2 months old. After moving them they always seem to have a growth spurt,no matter how many water changes they have had in the smaller tank.

Cheers

Thanks Larry, the fry are 1 week old and I'd say approx 1/2 1nch,not even.Far be it from me to question anything you guys say,but I did think that moving them at this size was a little premature.I'm going to leave them in the 10 gallon for at least a month and take it from there.

Unless you are consistently on top of water changes I believe the more room the better. If I have a free larger tank I always go for the one with more room.
If it's whiptails or other species that need a higher concentration of food in a more confined area, then I would go with the smaller tank.

If the fry are small, they are better off kept in a smaller tank where they can find the food much easier. Just be sure to do water changes. Once the fry grow a bit, they can be moved to a larger tank.

My reason exactly for smaller growout tanks.

Add onto that the old Jack Watley, of Discus fame, theory...
The fry will grow just as fast in a smaller tank if they have PLENTY of water changes.
