I went up to Atlantis today. On they way up, I always pass this huge pile of shale on the side of the road. It has to be ateast 10 feet high by 20 yards long. So today I decided to pull over and pick some pieces out. I picked up three to four pieces. As I am coming back to the car with some rock. A state trooper pulls over to see what I am up to. Turns out we went to public school together. He also had some tanks. We spent a good half hour digging through the shale for our tanks. I plan on grabbing some more of this stuff on the 28th.

That's really funny.
When I was in college my professor would take us to spots like that to look for fossils. The state troopers would always be on us in minutes and chase/threaten us away. We worked out a game to keep the troopers away from us for an hour or two...

First we would drive up with the crew in a van and pull over at the pre-selected site. All but one of us would get out and start working the shale. The man out would sloooowly change a tire on the van with the spare. Once the tire was changed, he would now join the work on the shale and another student would change a different tire on the van. We could pretty much keep working the shale and changing the tires without interruption until the same trooper saw us for the second time and pulled over to investigate why we were changing tires for 2-hours. The trick worked great, but we never got a trooper to work the shale with us!

The rock is still in my trunk. I grabbed a couple of small pieces and on large piece. The large piece is about 1 inch thick and 8 wide x 20 long. I will break it up into two or three pieces. I am definitely grabbing some more of this stuff.

Buy rock? Never gonna happen here. There's far to much rock in this country. :) I don't find it "cheap" to pick up rock, it's natural to do it.

I've found many rocks. I've also bought many rocks, especially holey rock. I don't live in Texas, and I'm not going to find any of it on the ground in New Jersey.

i was at Atlantis this Saturday as well. What is funny is about a month ago a Trooper I went to school with pulled me over, and guess what......gave me a ticket. I guess what I thought of him all along was true....................

the rocks that are used for drainage are usually pretty nice. I've picked a few of those up from some different places:)

That is not cheap. I prefer to call it 'Liberating the pieces form the Evil Overseers'! They are right on you when your liberating rock but where are they when you have a true emergency.

I am "on the job" If I get pulled over and issued a ticket. I don't get pissed off at the cop. That is there job. The only person to blame is myself for violating that specific law. As far as them not being that when you need them. I wish people knew how much the system gets abused. Some of the things people call 911 for are ridiculous.
Back to the rocks. I don't like to take rocks from personal property or businesses. I however have no problem taking rocks from the beach or other state, city our county own property. I also try to stay away from the catch basins.

I'm not mad at the cop, I could really care less....it was for an inspection, 4 days expired. If anything he was driving reckless; snow on the road, speeding to get up to me, cutting the car behind me off to get behind me, and finally pulling me over after tailgating me for a half-mile. Alot of unsolved crimes, violent crimes at that, and one pulls me over, and another comes by to see what is going on, great use of resources. I guess w/ the states budget shortfall they will be working over time to write those tickets.

Most state troopers are basically highway cops. There main focus is safety on the highway and roads. The state troopers have a license plate reader that will tell the officer if the car is stolen or has a expired registration. I know in NYC if either one of these pops up on the screen action must be taken. Also in NYC if the cop runs your information through the computer and your license is suspended it is a automatic arrest. No matter who you know. Big brother is watching.

So Bill where did you get the rocks from?
