Has anyone ever kept these before? I have about 10 growing out and from what I have read they get nasty and should be kept in pairs. Is this true or can u keep more than that as well as other species of fish with them?

Better off keeping them in pairs, unless the tank is very large with plenty of hiding places. The pair will make life miserable for the other fish in a small tank.

I had a pair on a 60gFBH tank years ago. They dug a huge pit under a few rocks and drove everything else to the sides fo the tank. They did spawn once and then got divorced, cichlid style.

I wanted them in my 125G Tang community as well and was warned off. Apparently once they spawn they kill everything in the tank, including often each other. I have a single. Gregga has some together, maybe he will chime in. His had not spawned yet last November when I talked to him, maybe that's a good thing. I was listening to him get advice on how to get them to spawn from the owner of Pro Aqua when we were there.

mikey,,
i have 4 left in a community 125g along w/ other malawi and tangs.. there fine.. no fights going on but there not the most viscious species in the tank.. i think the neolamp tetracanthus are.. lots of rock and hiding spots and there doing great.. got rid of a pr and i regret it.. they seem to be very nuetral.. nobody messes w/them and they dont mess w/ anyone.. i also mixed in the gold sexfaciatus w/ them and they do pretty well together.. so far so good..

my experience with them is they are ok in large groups--as long as no one spawns.

hey folks....
I have 7 neolamprologus gold sexfaciatus in a 75g w/a group of clown loaches. The tank is heavily rocked - by far the most difficult of mine to catch fish from.
To start with, these are all very large specimens, ranging from 5"-6.5". Admittedly, their gold and brown barring makes them an appealing species to keep. I assumed putting this many together would guarantee a mix of males & females. Well, the group has been together approx. 20 mo. and I've never had a spawn or slightest hint of breeding behavior. On the other hand, there is not one split fin or missing scale to be found. I've wondered if it was possible that I have 7 males. Hence, no females, so there is little to fight over. Or maybe I just have the "Unable To Spawn This Species Gene." Either way, kinda frustrating.
Admittedly, I have never vented these fish. At some point I'm gonna separate them into 2-3 mini groups and put them into smaller tanks then watch closely. For now, they are just eating my food and using my electricity.

They are all around 3 inch and in a 55 with about 40 other fish. No problems so far. I am gonna move them this week. I have to vent them to see what i got and maybe split them up into 2 groups. No fonts for me at least not yet lol. I will take some pics today.
