Hello everyone. I am setting up a 75 gallon Lake Malawi tank. My father in law has set me up with all the tank supplies (filters, stand etc.). I put the tank together and waiting to get the ph just right. I have been lurking on the site for a while and have learned quite a bit.

Welcome aboard and good luck with your first (?) Malawi tank. 75 gallons is an awesome size. Not too small and not too big for a wide range of fish...

Welcome aboard. It's always good to see a fellow Long Islander.

Welcome. Like Tom said, 75 is a great size tank to start keeping Malawi cichlids.

Are you thinking of doing single males or groups? Mbuna or peacocks and haps?

Glad to know another Long Islander too! I am building an all male Mbuna tank and I am happy to help if you have any questions! Tony

Thanks everyone. Thinking about Mbunas. Texas Holey rock and crushed coral is my PH base. However, I am open to all input, ideas and thoughts. Again thanks for the warm welcome,

I'm all for Mbuna!
The Holey Rock is great but be careful with the crushed coral. There is always a small chance that one of your fish sifting thru the substrate looking for food could scrape their mouth on a sharp edge of the crushed coral.
Many of my tanks have been converted over to Pool Sand. Some even have the old crushed coral still mixed in.

Fischfan thanks for the info. Will remove the coral and add sand. The good thing about starting a tank allows you to learn from others and you could go back and change things before you put in fish.

Twong, thanks for the welcome and the offer for help. I live in Hicksville, where do you get fish out by us. My 4.5 year old is very excited about the fish. WE sit in front of s lsp top and look at Mbuna's and gobies.

Check out all of our sponsors that are listed on the Home Page.
Each one gives an ECC discount of 10% or more on their livestock. I would definitely start out will all juveniles and let them grow out together, many times this leads to less aggression.

If you decided to use pool sand then do yourself a huge favor and rinse it thoroughly.
