To me this fish looks more like Haplochromis "Thick skin" http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=1546. Rather than this one http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=1556

What are some of the characteristics of the fish that you use to classify a fish? I would also accept that my references are inaccurate. As an intermediate fishkeeper I am just looking for some friendly discussion.

Greg, I have been confused about this one as well. I remember about 7 years ago I purchased some from a lfs in NJ. The gentleman who worked there, and also taught me an AWFUL LOT, explained the difference to me...Sorry but I forgot.
Hopefully one of the Vic specialists that have joined would be willing to school us.

I never really looked into them. Carlos from NJAS sold them to me at an auction when they were 1/2 big and had them labeled that. I will research them later.

When I first started with Cichlids about 15 years ago, I had purchased what were then called Obliquidens which look exactly like the photo in this thread. After about 7 years I took a break from fishkeeping until about 2 years ago. While surfing different sites looking for some of the fish I had previously kept, I began seeing articles that a true Obliquiden doesn't exist. I never found an answer that made much sense. The fish I knew now seems to be called Hap sp. 44, Hap Red Tail or Hap Thick Skin (this name I don't understand)

I had tried to hook up with Mack 74 for some of his fish during the famous Long Island trip west during 2007 but it went too far south for me.

Greg I always have them available if u ever get out this way!! Had some real nice batches lately. This fish can be confusing due males all being different. I look at my males and no 2 are the same color pattens.

I'm hardly an expert, but I did sleep in a Holiday Inn Express one time.........

This is a sp 44 aka thickskin:

The color pattern and the thickness/orientation of the bars seem very similar to this one. Yours remind me much more of them than of the latisfaciata.
