I had a breeding trio of these guys at one time. They were fine in a 30gallon tank. Truly is an awesome fish! A buddy of mine has them in with tropheus and petros and the ruby green still held his own...

Hi - first post. I bought some of these a few months ago from Live Fish Direct - 2nd group of fish I've bought from them - and the fish they sell are some of the nicest fish I've ever seen - gotta have something to do with their water changes - VERY healthy fish (this isn't an ad honest...) - but I've been quite happy with them - and have a tank full with a couple pairs spawning. The diffficulty I have is capturing fry - the tank is full of rockwork & they have dug tunnels through-out the 75 gallon tank. They're incredibly fast swimming fish... I have some floating plants & this is the only way so far I've managed to grab fry - take a net and swoop up a bunch of plants and find a couple fry hiding....
anyway gorgeous fish..

I'd like to see Africa - but the place scares me not sure which are worse the bugs, critters, or people.... anyway the other thing that scares me lately is the economy - i think I'll just work with my fish this year and hold-off on expeditions!... John

I've been contemplating ordering from LFD. I was going to get a trio of these and some albino taiwan reefs....i guess i just need to pull the trigger, especially since shipping is a flat $39

That is one victorian I don't have and would like very much!!
I've given away almost 300 ruby green fry and saturated the local market. (They breed like convicts!) From the east coast you'll likely drive through Columbus to get to ACA 2009 in Cincinnati. If I have any left by then they're yours for free.

I currently have four Ruby Greens that I am growing out as part of a CCA Grow-Out Contest. Two are gaining size very nicely, and two seem to be runts.

I donated all of the ruby greens to the cca growout contest and have more if anyone would like some...
Pm me for details. I can ship or meet at an upcoming cca meeting or the aca.
I'd bet the two big ones are males and the two smaller are females

Matt, that was a great idea...thanks.
When I got them I did not have a small tank that was unoccupied, so they are cruising around in a 55g getting three water changes per week at 50% each change.
I hope that you are right and the two much smaller ones are gals.

This is not a bash on you Matt... as how the heck would you know at a quarter of an inch or so...
But I had them for what two weeks? Three of them grew ( One, only a little bit ). The fourth didn't grow at all the entire time I had them.

It's hard to say but they're sexable at 1" or so with males being larger and starting to show bars and coloration.
Some Males also tend to be more aggressive so they get more food than subdominant males and females. Ron Nielson was the source of the parents.
All of the babies that I donated have the same father who bred with two different females on the same day. I stripped both females on the same day and all of the fry were raised in the same 40g tank...and were roughly the same size at the start of the contest.

I didn't know you got them from Ron...
If so I would have bought some from you.
I remember his male from way back when... better than any other male I have seen.

Update:
Two are at 1 1/2" and two are at 5/8".
That's a huge difference for four fish that are all growing out at the same time with the same exact conditions. In the same 55g are Gobies that are growing out...they are gaining size very nicely.

I've been considering clearing out my 29g tang community and getting a trio of these along with some Metriaclima Livingstonii. Any thoughts on this?

Not a big enough tank.
The Ruby Greens will need much more tank space.
As a matter of fact, I am not so sure I would do these two in the same tank.

Thats what I was thinking as well. That grouping was suggested by another person as a cookie cutter for that size tank. Always helps to get several opinions and not rush out because I want something different.

The livinstoni would do fine in a 29g by themselves. They spawned for me several years ago in a 20gL taNK. I used 5-6 medium size whelk shells as hiding/spawning places.
