After over a decade of not having a tank my wife finally let me get one for my son (10 gallon).
Now that we have it setup and working I've been trying to convince my wife to let me get a large 90+ gallon tank for me which I plan to stock with Cichlids.
My wife liked the idea but then mentioned she would like to have them breed. I'm fine with this but as I started reading I realized I would need a way to move the baby fish out to new homes or I would be over run with fish.
I want to be prepared.
I live in the Baltimore area and was curious what other people do in this situation.
As far as fish I would be looking to go with possibly Oscars, Jack Demps, or Green Terrors. The tank is not purchased and I realize that some of these might require a larger tank then 90 gallons. Not to mention my wife has to approve might say she wants different fish instead.

there are auctions, swap meets or local fish stores who might take fry/juvies for store credit. if you want any of those fish you mentioned you dont want to mix them with each other unless you want badly beaten or killed fish lol. I know from experience that jacks will kill anything that comes near their territory when they are guarding eggs or fry. 90 gallons would be more than sufficient as long as you dont have breeders and wanted to mix. good luck!

Thank you for inquiring before you buy!! More people need to do that. Theres swap meets with different clubs, craigslist, aquabid, petstores sometimes will take them for store credit. Common species like you mentioned, are often abundant & move slow. It's easy to saturate your local area so at some point they're going to be fish food. Maybe some fast dither fish like buenos aires tetras to pick them off while they're young when you get to that point.

I guess I'm just fortunate in that I don't need to get my wife's approval regarding fish activities.

jack dempsey, green terror= lots of fighting. Its great you are doing your research first, it's a lot cheaper. Did you even think of African Ciclids, your in the right place for that.

Well if I setup a small tank I wouldn't but to spend hundreds of dollars yes she needs to approve.

I'm not locked into these fish but I would like fish that are larger and as I said I would like to breed them. I haven't really looked at the other Cichlids.
I happen to love Oscars as I had one when I was 11 till I went to college although I didn't realize till later that I did not have a proper tank for it (20 gallon). Before I went to college I was going to give the fish to someone in NJ and it died in transit and ever since I always wanted to get another one. However my wife doesn't really like the look of them.

If you are into Central and South American cichlids, look at some of the photos by Aquamojo in the Photography forum under Today in the Fishroom. He has some beautiful fish and the best photos. Here is a link to one of my favorite fish of his: http://forums.eastcoastcichlids.org/showthread.php?t=5510
And some more photos of the same fish: http://forums.eastcoastcichlids.org/showthread.php?t=2320

Depending on where you live (don't know how the water is on the coast). I would check if your water is hard or soft.

If you live in Baltimore, visit the Aquarium and check out the different types of cichlids in person. I haven't been to that aquarium in many, many years but I am sure they should have an African rift lake cichlids tank and maybe a Central / South American cichlid as well. You could also visit House of Tropicals in Glen Burnie, a cichlids dealer in your area recognized by Cichlid News. You can also talk to the folks in the CCA (DC based Capital Cichlids Association)? There may also be a tropical fish society in Baltimore. Find a fish you like, but then research their care, water parameters, tank size etc BEFORE puchasing.
When setting up a large size tank it is always good to do the homework first.
Being from Baltimore, you should check out one of our club meetings down in Silver Spring. We actually have a meeting next weekend, 2/19. Our club is the Capital Cichlid Association. There are a lot of new world cichlid keepers in the club who could help you to get started with fry and/or used equipment/tanks for sale. We have a bunch of members from the Baltimore area. :beerchug:

Funny you mention that I went the Baltimore Aquarium twice within the last two weeks. I know what I would like to get the problem is getting my wife to decide. I think I'll check out the House of Tropicals in Gen Burnie to see what they have.
The reason for this post was to get more information. I'm a researcher so I tend to do a lot of research before making any decisions.

I have the clubs information from the Pet Expo in Timonium and I'm thinking about going but Silver Spring can be quite a drive from Baltimore.

Yeah, that would have been me.
It is a bit of a drive but be aware. You might just get hooked. LOL
We have people from Lancaster PA, Dover DE and the Jersey shore.
This month is a talk on photography in relation to your tank but there will still be plenty of fish and fish nuts. LOL
