I want to paint the back of tank instead of using painted plexi glass panels like I do now. would it be a problem to drain the tank enough to move it & paint the back? or do you think it'll run to much and look bad?

I would drain the tank completely and do it right. You would have to cover the tank very tightly in case an spray makes it into the tank. If you have another tank put the fish in there. A rubbermaid tub or a garbage can (dark grey) can be used to keep the fish for a few days.

depending on how much room you have between the wall and the back of the tank, i have painted them in place with water and fish in tank. i used paint and rollers

Thank you everyone, With all the rock work, I really want to avoid having to tear it all apart if I can. What paint did you use?

In that case it shouldn't be nearly as much of a problem keeping the water in the tank. However moving a tank with water in can be a problem.

Know anyone that installs siding for a living? Get some aluminum trim coil. It comes in a multitude of colors. Easy to install, completely waterproof. Last for years.

buy a can of rustoleum black from home depot...cheaper than buying a can of glidden and mixing it black. Roll it on- 2 coats

Make sure the first coat is completely dry before applying the second coat or the 2 coat theory is out the window. I use the cheapest flat black from Lowes or Depot

Tape a large heavy duty trash bag or two across the back of the tank. Bags come in black and brown. Last for years.

^^^^ Same thing here, but I use dark blue. Spray painting takes too many coats and ends up being more expensive for multiple tanks.

Same here 2 coats with a roller. And make sure you clean the glass really good any oils will keep the paint from sticking.
