I've been interested in keeping crayfish for many years, but the fish that have always held the top importance to me in my collections would rather eat them than co-habitate with them....so what always started as a neat project ended up as a convenient food source.

Lately I have taken a little bit of time to explore the different varieties and to be honest I would like to make a serious go at it here pretty soon. Any suggestions???

I had an australian red clawed yabbie. I absolutely loved him. Unfortunately after a year and a half he molted and wasn't able to come back to... he had a great personality. Very active and he was an escape artist. I used some plexiglass to take away any potential for escape. I keep wishing I had more but there aren't to many good local sources. He was pretty easy to care for I screwed up I think which caused his death. But I had him in a shared tank.
There was an extremely useful site I believe crayfishmates. If will double check on that.
Let me know what you decide

I forgot the exact name- but research the self cloning varients...you get one and its able to (somehow) have offspring- without a mate!
If you are going to be at NEC this year, I may be able to stir some up for you to try

Thanks for your replies. Much appreciated as always.

Yes, the escape issue is one that I have to contend with for sure. The "wife" would not appreciate a clawed creature of any sort crawling around the rugs. It's bad enough when a 1-inch cricket is in the house.....let alone a 3- or 4-inch mini lobster!!

Flareside, are you referring to the MARMORKREBS MARBLED CRAYFISH???

I found several of them for sale over on AquaBid.com. Those are pretty neat, but I want something that gets a bit bigger I think.

first off my girl was very scared at first as we kept Peppie in the bedroom tank. But he got to be 6 plus inches and adorable. she grew to love him and even misses him.
so i happen to be in north jersey picking up bettas and the breeder mentioned petland in hackensack had some thing i needed. i went they were out but they did have a orange crayfish about 3-4 inches and he was very cool. i went back and forth for 20 minutes and i still regret it but i left him. in case you are interested as i dont see those guys often and he was only 25 which is cheap for a petstore

Thanks for the info! I have seen those orange crayfish on line, but never in a shop. Maybe I'll have to look a little more carefully next time I am in PetLand!!
