My question is about recycled filter media but let me tell you my story first.

I came down late one night and heard some "clicking sound" from my tank. I know the sound are from the loaches but decided to turn on my tank lights to see what’s going on anyway. Lo and behold, I saw snails for the first time in my big tank. Good thing I have a colony of "excited" clown loaches. I actually saw them devour some snails that were clinging on the side of my tank. Some of them were sweeping the substrate to get the crawling mollusk. It was fun to see those loaches munching on those pesky snails.

While it was nice to have snacks for my loaches, I asked myself, where I got them in the first place. The only thing I did some weeks back was utilized some old ceramic rings that I got last summer when I bought an old canister filter from craigslist. I thought they were safe to use since they were dry and have not seen water for a long time. I didn’t use them right away when I got them. They were in a plastic container with no lid.

No rocks or décor was introduced so I’m sure that I got those snails from the recycled ceramic rings but any idea of where else I got them snails? Another question is, do you use someone else’s filter media in the first place? in case you use them, do you boil/sterilize them first?

The snails cant last long if they are not in water. If the used media was dried for more than a day or two I doubt thats how they got introduced. Do you have snails in your other tanks. Using a fish net from one tank to another can transfer snails. Usually they are very small and you dont notice them.
I always clean used media very well. Boiling water or bleach will do the job. Of course if your using the media to seed another tank you cant sterilize it.

Will, I have no snails in all my tanks. I rinsed the ceramic rings prior to use though. :coz:

The snails did not come from the dried out media. Did you add any plants to the tank? Did you get any new fish recently? Perhaps you added the snails while adding the new fish.

Joe, I didn't add any plants to the tank and I don't have any in all my tanks. Do you think, eggs of snails will survive inside the ceramic rings?

I got some wilcaughts from Steve which I recently added before the snail infestation. Perhaps Steve gave me some snails as a bonus...LOL. :coool!:

I would think they came in with the wild caught, not on the fish but in the bag, stired up went steve netted them.

Snail eggs are amazingly resilent.

I had a 10 gallon tank that sat with nothing i it upside down for over 6 months.

Filled it up with water for a microfex worm/daphnia farm and a few days later i had little snails cruising around!
