The CCA has a great club. You'll love the people and the wings!!
They always have neat stuff for the auction too. Wonder if there is a fishroom nearby that would be willing to open up for after the meeting???
I know of one in the Baltimore that is fantastic you might be interested in seeing. Not sure it that is possible but we can mention something to Pat.

Here is the link to the CCA schedule. http://www.capitalcichlids.org/forums/showthread.php?t=2812
As May gets closer more information will be forthcoming. We are in the middle of redoing the website and forum so information is missing.
At every meeting we try to have a decent speaker, refreshments, a raffle of dry goods, and our mini auction. Now I say mini auction but at times its anything but mini. A few months ago we had 112 items to auction off from fish to tanks. We try not to have tooooo big of an auction because it takes so long. The meetings start at 2pm and usually last about 3 to 4 hours. In 2007 we had Ad at a meeting and had 70 adults plus some kids. At that point we were a lot smaller club.
This past year we averaged over 50 people at all meetings.
To sell in our mini auctions we have a 3070 split for non club members.
For club members its only $1.00 per item unless its a donation.
We are located just north of DC. There are also a couple of nice stores on the way if you have the time. One is only like 5 or 6 miles away and owned by club members.
Also as we get closer, I will check into the posibility of another stop. Don't know untill a lot closer.

Sorry, Larry
just noticed this.
Yes I like getting my year scheduled out in advance. I just have October open and thats because we may have a show and change the date.
year before last 3 local clubs got together and put on a small show. A few speakers on Saturday and auction on Sunday. If we do it again it will be the week after the usual CCA meeting so not sure I want to bring in people both weeks. Waiting to see if this works out.
See you in November

Why would you want to sit at home and read a magazine when you have the chance to meet up with the Man himself...Ad Konings.

I can't wait for this. I saw Ad speak at the ACA convention in Cincy back in 2003. Fantastic stuff.
You can't get any better than this. There is no alternative. Hope to see a lot of you guys/gals there.

Out of curiosity are there any details yet as to what time in the morning we'd all be leaving? I MAY or may not already be in Baltimore for that week as my older brother is graduating from Loyola College the following weekend. Just wondering if I should expect waking up at 5am again :).
Second, how long does the Auction usually last? I was wondering if ECC had enough time (or if I am my family have enough time) to go to the Baltimore National Aquarium again...
Either way, unless something should fall out of the sky and prevent me from driving there I am going...!

Looks like we will be leaving and meeting at some stores in the DC area for a Pet Shop Hop...and we have no timeline as of yet.
The CCA's meeting starts at 2.
As for their auction, it will start after Ad Konings has finished speaking.
The question of "how long will the auction last"...
Does anyone realize that no one EVER knows how long an auction will last?
How many lots?
How long will the bidding last?
This goes for ALL auctions...no one knows how long the auction will last until it is over.

Thanks for the info that there are other plans to meet at places besides the auction. I've never been to any of the other local auctions by the JSAS, NJAS, or the ones you guys ran for nycichlids, so I have no idea how they are run.
Does it look like it will be an all day trip like the PA road trip though? (I remember some of you didn't come back until almost midnight...).
Either way I'll see you all 04-04-09 and the CCA auction...

If this is simply a CCA meeting auction it will probably not last too long, hopefully.
NJAS meeting auctions last about an hour.

03-11-2009, 10:45 AM
Lately the auction has run till about 4:30-5:30
Now take this with a grain of salt.... it might be a bit bigger since Konings will be there. I know I will be bringing more fish than usual for a couple reasons. 1 more people... 2 you guys will be there :)
Our "mini" auctions aren't that "mini" any more. Last month there were over 100 items.
That doesn't mean you have to stay for the whole thing either !! ..... if you help be a runner you can pick what goes up for auction when ;) *hint hint*

03-11-2009, 10:55 AM
After speaking with Julie the other night I am going to echo Sarah's post.
There will definitely be donations by the ECC, as there will be by others...which equals to more items being auctioned off.
As for staying late...I know that I will, and that many of us would be more than happy to help out in any capacity!

Sorry I haven't been around as much. Too much going on.
I always come down I 95 and follow the directions on the site. Its a little cross country but the DC beltway and Georgia are a pain in the ...
Plus going the directions you see above brings you within about 1 mile of Scales Tropical Fish Warehouse. One of our members owns this store.
As for the mini auction Sarah is right. Last month we had one of our own members giving a talk on phtography and had 91 people there plus kids. THere were 160 items in the "mini auction" It was over 1 1/2 hours. We don't really have an auctioneer and we take a little while.
The meeting is at 2. Usually the speaker starts by 2:20 or so and hopefully he finishes by around 3:30. Then a 15 minute or so break followed by the raffle drawing and auction.
If you are stopping at stores on the way down, I would travel first to Exotic Aquatics, then House of Tropicals, then Scales. Exotic is like 5 minutes off I95. House of tropicals is like 15 minutes from I95 and Scales, like I said using the club directions is 1 mile off your path. Plus scales is like 5 miles from the club meeting site. So if you have too you could hit coming in or out.

For any of you fence sitters regarding this trip, I think there will some very nice fish in the CCA May 9 meeting auction.
CCA and PCCA are exchanging boxes o' fish for their respective May meetings.
Looks like there will be top of the shelf fish coming to MD.
From our own Sarah(Longstocking):
longstocking
Board of Directors
For our new members:
A box exchange is a program we started a while back. We contact another cichlid club and exchange a box full of fish with each other. All fish from both clubs are donated. Tyically there are 12+ bags of fish in each box sent. Then we auction the box/fish the other club sent off.
----------------
Start figuring out what you would like to donate....
Ok in May 09 we will be exchanging boxes with.... wooo hooo !!!! ....
The Pacific Coast Cichlid Association
If you don't know this club..... well, they have some fantastic fish.
They have said they will be sending stuff like :
Quote:
Lamp minutus, O. boops nkondwe is., S. polli, Hap ruby green, maybe foai sibwesa, Lamp lemarii, young spilonotus breeding group, etc.. who knows really..
So in addition to meeting Ad Konings, you can bid on some terrific fish and help out the CCA!

For those of you planning on joining us in May, here are our mini-auction rules. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
Mini-auction rules for the Capital Cichlid Association, Inc.
(Hereafter known as CCA or “the club”)
Definition
The mini-auction is held during a regular monthly meeting. Fish and fish-related items are offered for bid to those in attendance. The items usually auctioned off are the property of the membership, donations from members and speakers, or items donated by manufacturers and sponsors of the club.
The mini-auction is one facet of the meeting that allows members of CCA to buy fish, sell fish, and raise money for the club. The auction also provides the membership an avenue to diversify existing bloodlines of their stock and acquire new and rare species. The members may also acquire Breeder’s Award points by selling the required amount of fry from each brood in the mini-auction.
Donations
Donations are items that the manufacturers, local fish stores, online retailers, members, speakers, or others have given to the club. The full amount obtained from the auctioning of these items goes to the club to offset the costs of running the meetings.
If you plan on being a seller at the auction, please download and fill out the form: Seller Form (PDF) *Seller form can be picked up at meeting*
Sellers
Members: On items that Members of the CCA put into the auction and not designated as a donation, the club will get the first $1.00 of the selling price. The remainder of the money, if any, will go to the seller. There will be a 15 item limit per member or family. That is 1 seller sheet unless the items are donations to the club.
Non-Members: On items not designated as a donation, the club will receive 1/3 of the selling price (minimum $1.00) with the remaining 2/3 going to the seller. The splits will be rounded, up or down, to the closest whole dollar. The Board of Directors, for special circumstances, may waive this rule. Mini auction items will be limited to 15 items max. That is 1 seller sheet.
All bags should be properly marked with the name of the fish.
All known or suspected hybrids must be labeled as such and made known or announced prior to the start of bidding for that item.
No small individual foods or chemicals will be accepted. Small items such as the $1.00 or $2.00 or sample size items, should be bagged together to sell. These items will be turned away at the registration table. These items take too much time that could be spent on larger items or fish.
No open containers of food or chemicals will be allowed.
Sellers will receive their pay out at the end of the mini auction. No monies will be given out before the end, without prior consent of the Treasurer of the CCA.
Buyers
Persons bidding on items will not need to register. The mini-auction will not have bidder numbers. When a bidder wins an item, a runner will bring that item to the bidder and, in turn, will collect the money immediately. Members may, at the discretion of the Treasurer or the Auction recorder, run a tab.
General rules
All items must be preregistered with the Auction Coordinator prior to the beginning of the mini auction. The proper form must be filled out and all bags must be properly labeled. The form can be downloaded here for your convenience.
All live fish must be properly bagged in bags designated for fish. Fish brought in zip lock or other non-fish bags will not be accepted. Make sure the bag is large enough for the species and always have about 1/3 water and 2/3 air or oxygen. Large aggressive fish must be triple bagged.
The auctioneer will start the bidding by asking for a dollar amount that he or she sees as a reasonable starting bid. Items will increase by $1.00 until they get to $10.00, at which point subsequent bids will increase by $2.00. If the item is a “high dollar” item, the auctioneer may ask for bids at a $5.00 interval. A seller may put a “reserve price” or minimum bid amount on the item at their discretion. This information must be marked on the item as well as the registration sheet.
Any item that does not receive a reasonable offer will be put back on the table and re-offered at the end of the mini auction. Any item that does not bring the minimum designated bid as prescribed by the seller will not be sold, unless the seller agrees to lower the minimum at the end of the auction.
Any person who has been banned from membership in the CCA will not be allowed to bid on or sell any item.
Other Definitions
Seller: The person who brings the item to the meeting for the purpose of selling that item in the auction.
Bidder: The person who is placing bids on the item with the intent of purchasing it.
Runner: The person who brings the item to the winning bidder and then collects the money.
Auction Coordinator: The person sitting at the head table who is taking the registrations and recording the bids.
Member: Any person who is current with the yearly dues of the CCA.
Non-Member: Any person who is a visitor or non-paid member of the club.
Banned: Any person who has been refused membership or has had membership privileges revoked by the Board of Directors of the CCA.
Any of the rules may be changed without notification by a vote of the Board of Directors of the CCA.
The final say on any rule of discussion will be by the Board of Directors or the President of the CCA.

Our meetings always have what we call a "mini" auction. Recently these are over 100 items.
We have the box exchange coming in as well as a box of fish
that is being donated by Atlantis.
The main focus of the meeting is the speaker but the auction sometimes takes a life on to its self. You never know what you are going to find like at any club meeting. Depends on who shows up.
I do expect a big crowd and parking will be tight so car pooling would be good. The last time we had Ad in we were about 1/2 the size we are now and we had people from 6 states show up. It was a blast.

Ad is always a great speaker. I really enjoy his powerpoint stuff. He mixes in great pictures from the lake along with video.
Please remember that this is the small auction after a meeting. This is not a full scale auction like you guys had a few weeks ago. We do try to limit it to about 1 1/2 hours. Anything more than 1 hour and you start loosing a lot of bidders. Then things go for nothing.
Based on past meetings, I expect a big crowd so make sure you park legally. There are some spaces for employees only but remember that this is a police station and those employees work weekends and can write you tickets. lol.
I only post this because we have had some problems as we have gotten bigger with the parking and the police have interupted the meeting before because of people parking in spots they should not have. lol

Needless to say I was outbid on a few items...LOL.

If we do it again it will be the week after the usual CCA meeting so not sure I want to bring in people both weeks. Waiting to see if this works out.
Pat
Pat - do you have a firm date for your show? We are beginning to plan the fall auction and we, for obvious reasons, prefer not to have our event coincide with the CCA or NJAS shows.

Anybody interested in ride sharing down? I am in S. Jersey and could meet at the I95 off ramp for Broad street/Stadiums in Philly. I work at the ship yard there and could park my car and contribute for gas and tolls. More money for Fish!

I ordered fish from Sarah, so I am committed to going. I am still looking for ride, I don't really want to make the trip alone.

Ok, so I have a question for the CCA people...
What time is registration for the auction?
maddog10
05-07-2009, 06:00 AM
You only need to register if you are selling. We like to have all the sheets in before the speaker starts the presentation, so registration is usually from about 1:30 to 2:15. You can download the form from our website and have it filled out before you get there. I will then assign you a sheet number, then you add the lot numbers to your items.
finman57
05-07-2009, 07:36 AM
This is a cash on demand type of auction. You bid, no numbers, and if you win the runner brings it to you and you pay them. Like mentioned before, this is not an all day auction. (I Hope)
Its just an auction after a meeting that we have every month. Also we do not have lables. Just write on your bag whats in it. Then the number we give you for it.
No we do not record or allow video taping of the meeting. Some speakers don't mind and some forbid it so rather than create problems we just dont do it. That and if we don't record and post it then I can use the same talk in a few years. lol Of course with Ad, he has many talks.

I don't think I'll make it. Our van has been having huge antifreeze leaks the past week and problems with overheating...so I don't think it would be wise for me to drive it all the way down there... Oh well :(...

I have to say that I am a bit disappointed.

Stuck behind the table, you say? I know the feeling.
I see that your October CCA meeting coincides with our Fall Auction (10/10).
Now that I am a member of the CCA I vote to bring the meeting up to Northern Jersey for the day and sit back and enjoy our auction!
Actually Sarah and I were having an animated conversation about who had the best home for a certain group of Featherfins that were going up for bid...and neither of us got them.
All I have to say to the members of ECC is this...
You missed out.
The CCA are a GREAT group of people!!!
Ad Konings was great...and very gracious to pose for pictures and sign books.
I have to get some shut-eye...pictures to follow tomorrow.

It was a great day!! As usual I got there in the nick of time... but at least not late!
The talk was very interesting, and of course the *eye candy* was excellent!
The auction was amazing... lots of really neat fish, not only the infusion of the box exchange fish, the donation from Atlantis, but just the general bags of fish from teh club memebers! I even came away with something... :)
Glad you joined up Bill... now I won't always be the furthest traveling member when I make it there.

Bill arrived late :neener: to my house and we hit the road a little after 10:00.
We picked up John (jroo99) off the 95S Broad Street exit and headed to MD.
Arrival time was 1:00. We donated our fish(C. cutteri, C. horei, T. moori red throat Lupota and Sulphur head peacocks) along with the Konings Malawi book (3rd edition)) and chatted with Pat, Sarah, Mike and several other of the CCA people who came to our auction(Dave , Kevin, et.al.) Julie of Frybabies and Bev of Amazon Basement, two of our sponsors, were also in attendance.
The food was unveiled and we proceeded to cafone down hot dogs, meatballs, chips. What a great spread.
Then came picture time with Ad. Bill will post these later today.
Ad then gave his excellent presentation on Malawi peacocks. I found the deep water species aspect of the talk very interesting. These are fish that we will most likely not see in the hobby for quite some time, if ever, since they live at depths of > 200 feet. It is not yet physically possible to collect these fish at these great depths and bring to the surface without causing expansion of the swim bladder thus injuring other vital organs.
I thought it would be fascinating if researchers could send a remote submersible to these depths and obtain footage of the species in their natural habitat. Similar to what is done in the ocean depths. Of course this takes time and $$$...enough said.
After his talk the raffles and auction took place. I did manage to win a ditty bag during the raffle.
There were quite a few rare fish. Sibwesa furcifers, a very rare boops, a shelldweller which I have never seen -Lamp. minutus. Unlike the ECC auction, Apistogramma went for big money.
I managed to pick up a pair of Cryptoheros panamensis, group of Astatotilapia callipterus and a very green group of Brochis splendens.
Then it was time to depart and head to Outback for a steak(me), lamb(Bill) and chicken(John) dinner.
After dropping John off, we arrived in Yardley at 1010. A well spent 12 hour day.
Thanks again to all of the CCA members and Ad for a great time. I would certainly do this again.
