Once a month after doing weekly water changes I forget to put chlor-out in one tank and wipe out most of the fish in there til I notice something wrong. This week I was filling my next to the last tank and realized I did not touch one of the 50 breeders on the top rack. So I quickly drained it about 40% then I proceeded to fill it. The reason for not draining it earlier was I moved 12-2" Callochromis into my 125 and left 6 leloupi, 3 whiptail cats and 6 ancistrus. Well after I filled it I had to run to the store and when I came back all the leloupi were floating and one of my breeding female albino ancistrus cats was dead. I quickly added chlor-out and saved all the rest! Three weeks before this I wiped out a 55 gallon tank of all the fish. Then I finished water changes up late and went to bed. Got up next day to fishroom smelling.
Anybody have any ideas on how to avoid being so absent minded when doing water changes?

WHATEVER - like I'm going to do that. I'm in it for the beauty of the fish and tanks. I don't need more than I already have to take care of. I'm a princess.;)

I always put the jug of cloram x in front of the tank I am doing at that time. This way I don't forget. The hardest part is making it a habbit!:)

Hey vinny that's because you live in the Bronx! They don't purify anything there! :D

The only problems was some unknown we think it was a virus. the fish would spin out then die. either from a water change or even if you tried to catch them they would freak out then die. I was supposed to send some to a Acquit lab in AK. to try to identify the problem. The Acquit biologist were going to do a free test because it was so weird. it also happened to to others people in the bronx. They are bulding a filtration plant for our tap water.

I never use any Prime or Clor out doing water changes.. I run the water through this little system I made up.. Its a home water filter setup with a sediment filter and a carbon filter. I do up to 80% water changes on my Tropheus tanks and they love it. Total cost approx 75$$

Maybe I will look into that Aqualung? It would save me on buying Chlor-out.

When you have Mega Bucks invested in fish,I think it's a worth while addition to any system.. You can use 2 carbon filters ,I wrap the first one with a polishing pad, what you see in the picture is a foam rubber selve that fits like a glove. Or you can use a sediment filter fisrt then the carbon filter..I've done up to 80% water changes on my Tropheus tanks with no ill effects.. You can get everything you need at Home Depot or Loews..I've been useing this system for over 25 years,so I know it's safe and effective! Joey

Wise words Joey, You are a true professional. Very clean water is the first line of defiance against Disease. When you have clean water your fish are less stressed and there fore the fishes imune system is at full strength. Who knows what king of pathogens we introduce into our tank when we do a water change and what about all the chemicals in tap water, who knows what there affect on the imune system is. Good going Joey :)
