I forgot a species, Chilotilapia rhoadesi. Little bugger is growing incredibly slowly... Recently had a growth spurt though after putting him in the 265g where he grew from 2" to nearly 3.5" in a little more than a month after daily feedings of 3mm pellets OR Plankton...

Ed I have seen Jay's set up in person. It's impressive!! His Z-rocks are awesome. He is trying to develop a line breed Z-rock. So far, as I can tell, he's coming up with nice offspring. A matter of fact I got a pair of his offspring which are growing up nicely ( without HORMONE INDUCED foods in case you are wondering). Does Erik have better looking fishes them Jay, AMS or RSC??? Line breed fishes ARE ALLWAYS different them the original species. BTW do you have to justify yourself by posting how many miles and hours you travel to get fishes, in order to claim a better pedigree. I ( and lots of this site members) have travel lots of MILES and spend lots of HOURS picking up fishes and you DON'T see US posting. Just maybe, INSTEAD of driving that many hours YOU should, perhaps have them ship in..................and buy more fishes!! You are a very opionated person, so AM I !! Thanks in advance for your repply. Paul

Not really... UPS Ground service doesn't extend down to South Carolina so overnight would be in the $70-$80 range.

Gas for the Honda to go down there and then back up was about $60 altogether, so it was a little cheaper but the plus side is I got to meet a couple new people and was able to get the fish home the same day reducing the stress on the fish from being on a truck or airplane overnight.

Some nice additions! Looking forward to pics of your Stigmatochromis sp. 'spilostichus type'

Right now they are just silver but the male is big so as soon as I get them in their own tank they should color up.

They are sometimes incorrectly sold as Sciaenochromis gracilis (that species doesn't even exist). To add even more to the confusion some people think that Mylochromis gracilis is actually Stigmatochromis 'spilostichus type' which it isn't...

Here's pics of Stigmatochromis 'spilostichus type':

I just got 2 that were listed as "assorted haps". I'm not sure what kind they are, but they are a beautiful light orange and have some random blackish spotting on them (that is hard to see in the pics). They are getting along quite well with the sole survivor of my last group, Larry, a Kenyi mix (I believe). I also have a pleco and 3 clown loaches.

Yeah Ed, nice setup. How big is the tank again?

That was two years ago in 2008. I don't have any plants in there anymore....though I am thinking of putting another Aponogeton boivinanus (i can never spell the species name right. It's the plant in the far right side of the tank in that video) and just remember to keep cutting the flower stalks next time. What happened was the plant kept sending up 6ft long (it would just reach the surface and then grew along the surface to the other side of the tank trying to find air). I wanted to see what the flowers looked like without realizing that after they flower they tend to go dormant (the bulbs)...

Which is bothering me, since I do want it to be a show tank but I also want it to be a breeding tank. So right now I just have various large rocks around with very little cave space (only two caves, but there is plenty of cover space to hide behind rocks, etc if they want to).

Right now I am thinking of just removing both caves, and the rocks forming them, and replace them with a few HUGE 50lb rocks. And then add 1 or 2 large pvc pipes for them to use as caves/cover. PVC isn't pretty, but after it gets scratched up a bit hair algae can grow real well on it. Plus it will be very easy to use them to trap holding females in as well as remove the caves and move them around.

Anyway the tank is a 265g reef ready perfecto tank with a 25watt Aqua Ultraviolet UV sterilizer. Right now the water is green from all the phytoplankton/algae spores in the water because I had to remove the uv sterilizer to replace the bulb, which in the process I managed to break the $60 quartz sleeve that goes around the bulb. I'm going to hook it back up today and should have crystal clear water within a few hours :).

Tanks dimensions are 7ftx2ftx2.5ft or 84"x24"30". The tall part really kills me, it's difficult to catch some fish and pretty scary to lower or remove rocks out of it. I already had a scare dropping a 40-50lb rock about 2ft in there. Luckily the 6" of water plus sand plus eggcrate saved the tank...

I have my eyes on a glasscages 240g tank as my next one...those are 8ft long, 2ft wide, 2ft tall. Cheaper than perfecto 265g's too :).

Ed, where did you end up getting your Fire Crest from and how does he look? I know you're a firm believer in females bringing out the best characteristics in males (humans aside), so I was wondering how many you're keeping and the ratio?

Got a pair back in february from Erik Dyke. Not much color at the moment as they are still in a 20g temporarily (doing fine in there) and the female was tiny but they're going to get their own 55g soon. I paid a small fortune for this pair (most money I've ever paid per fish) but was worth it.

Part of the reason why I wanted the pair immediately back then instead of waiting for them to be pond raised (should be a few more months, but expect them to be sold out like crazy) is that my pair could be considered "G1" or generation-1. All other captive raised ones would now be offspring from that shipment (making my pair "uncle and aunt" of all future captive raised ones). Me and Erik actually discussed after both of ours breed to keep exchanging parent breeders and offspring to help keep the blood diverse since wildstock of this species no longer exist.

Granted when Old World does vat/pond breeding they have tons of females and males in the tank making all the fry have diverse blood, but they are still closely related (like half brothers/sisters to each other, etc).

So when Old World breeds there's, I'll be getting more to add to my pair to make a colony and then keep trading with Erik and other breeders yearly to keep the blood as pure and diverse as possible.

This species NEEDS to be in the hobby more...

i just ordered a colony of 8 red top Lwanda peacocks and 16 blue orchid peacocks all 1" im making a custom divider im trying a few different things the holes in eggcrate are too big for them at that size... i doubt it will work long term but for now i can grow them out in their own 55 and not worry about which females are which.. thinking about getting rid of the ca/sa in my 75 gallon tank and putting the Lwanda in there.. at the moment i have lethrinops sp nyassae fry (got from kev) at .5" i think ima keep a few of them thou so i have 2 males and 4-6 females.. and both my nyassae females are holding.. and then i have ob peacock fry real small only like 2 or 3 weeks old the eurekas should start breeding soon 1 male is colored up nicely hes still small thou.. the rest are still smaller i think i have 1 male and 2 females almost ready to breed and then idk 15-20 smaller guys that i cant sex yet

The CTMs are very nice & somewhat unusual fish (at least in this area). Here's some pics of my growout group. They're about 2-2.5" and starting to really get some color. Sorry about the pics, they're in a low tank that's hard to shoot very well.

Ha!

Sorry, I 'm so used to using my shorthand...my fry tanks are labeled with things like ....LAK....CAL...CLLC....CMMR...... :runnningaround:

I 'borrowed' some of those that came in a couple of years ago for a while and these are from the last spawn that I collected. They came in about (or at?) the same that the CT Norths did and most of the attention was on the CTNs because they're (to many observers) a bit flashier.

masinje, If I ever have to thin out some males or anything like that, I'll get in touch with you.

Ed, can't make it..that is my busiest time of year at work. However, Bill should sponsor you to be the ECC Rep. at the FOTAS convention this fall :coool!:

fishboy i think when he was using punctuation like that he was just quoting me. I type really fast and idk thats just how i type.. sorry. cuz in my head theres a pause as if i were talking... see lol when you type 90wpm and you developed those skills from mackin girls on aol 10 years ago punctuation goes out the window..

john: nothing wrong with shark river hills i meant most of neptune is gross (mostly down the hill) so you probably live in shark river hills. i had a winter rental in avon over there like 9 years ago around when we had that really big storm that gave us 3 feet of snow. im in ocean township and neptune alot i was there today actually.. i train brazilian jiu jitsu at my friends school in ocean township right across the highway from bj's and next to scoops ice cream parlor on 35 north and my kid lives in neptune so im down there frequently.

i have a pretty big setup and alot of rare fish mostly that i got from kev some i ordered online. im jus getting to a point now where my stock list is final and im done even thou i always say that and then get more or a new tank. if you want come thru sunday morning kev is actually coming to my house so i can fix his computer and im either siliconing in a background or filling and adding fish depends when the background shows up..
