Well I havent been to many yet..cars crappy.
Aquarium Adventure by me has nice shows tanks, but are complete ripoffs and really dont know too much about africans. I couldnt tell you about their salt expertise because I dont keep salt tanks...yet...
There is a place in New hyde park I just found out about...Pretty sure its called "Pets Pets Pets". They have a good selection of fish from juvies up to breeder groups for sale. I Picked up my Tiger Fenustratus from them. Im waiting for em to color up. I actually saw a few vics as well. Good selection of SA too. Real big place. Relatively cheap too.
My favorite place is total aquariums in lynbrook. Small but top quality with a decent selection. Very clean too. They can get anything you want as well obviously.

I usually buy fish from other hobbyists, however, if I buy from a LFS, then these are clearly, IMHO, the two best in Suffolk Country:
1. Aqua Hut, Coram. Best bang for the buck anywhere. Dry goods prices rival those on the internet. Always has a decent assortment of cichlids - old and new world. Cool things pop up in the tanks on a regular basis. Fish are healthy.
2. Country Critters, Patchogue. very large place, usually has decent selection but is a little hit or miss. Two enormous show tanks when you walk in. a little pricey, but always healthy fish.

+1. To go the ny throughway it takes 1h 12 mins from my girlfriends house. Taking back roads cut that time down to 22mins. Just about the same time to get to the closest petsmart. I don't even know of any other places that have fish though I'm always on the look out

Beital's Aquarium in Pearl River, NY has some of the nicest fish (fresh and salt) that you will find anywhere. The store doesn't carry many small fish, but if you are looking for adults or BIG fish, it is the place to go. Something new comes in all the time. Prices are a bit on the high side, but the fish selection is excellent. You won't find nicer Malawian cichlids anywhere.

+1 Gotta agree 100% with Joe. Beital's has a large service business where they maintain the aquariums at Barney's and many other stores so he has full size adults to replenish the displays.
Also agree with Pets Pets Pets on Franklin Avenue off Hempstead Turnpike and Total Aquariums in Lynbrook.
In NYC, gotta go with Pacific Aquarium on Delancy near the Williamsburg Bridge.
Just across the border in Greenwich, CT can't beat House of Fins. The only LFS I ever saw have black tip reef sharks (3 foot juveniles) for a 30 foot tank they set up for an office.
pacific aquqrium on delancey is cool...ther are a few more all a couple blocks from each other in that area..........new world on 38st has really nic saltwater stuff...a few african tanks.......

If you are going to go to on a road trip to Beitals, then you have to stop at the Defiant Brewery which is basically next door. They are always brewing up a variety of beer styles.:beerchug:

I just want to let everyone know that Aquarium Adventure in Carle Place closed down maybe a month or 2 ago. I have no clue how they stayed in business for so long with their prices so high...even with their club member discounts.
There is going to be a new petstore in the same store called " pets warehouse". Supposidley it will be opening the last weekend of march. It will be more of an all around pet store. Something like a petco I guess.
I cant wait to get in their and check it out. Hopefully they will still have a decent sized fish section.
Also I noticed that there was a sign on the door saying they needed a part time or full time fish section manager or worker...if anyone is interested.

I went to visit gregga last month, he took me to aqua hut, I am going back, not many LFS have a cichlid isle, and very good prices I bought some red line barbs for my planted tank best price I have ever seen them for. I smell a fish store road trip.

If the ECC is looking for a different type of road trip, how about Suffolk County Long Island? We have a number of guys with fishrooms (myself, Mack, Phil...etc...) and 2-3 LFS that are pretty good with african cichlids. Just an offer.
