http://i1027.photobucket.com/albums/y334/Golden_modz/elimanningelite.jpgManning took tremendous punishment against the 49ers’ relentless pass rush, and the bruises on his face were evidence. Still, when the Giants beat the 49ers, 20-17, in overtime Sunday night in the NFC Championship Game to get a Super Bowl rematch with the Patriots after they ended New England’s undefeated season four years ago, any pain he might have endured was blocked out by the victory.

“Obviously, we know they are a great team. They’ve been a great team for years,” Manning said. “They’ve had an unbelievable season. They had terrific players all over. We played them once this year and it came right down to the wire. They are playing great football of late also. Hopefully, we can continue to play our best football.”

The Giants won this game because San Francisco’s Kyle Williams (subbing for the injured Ted Ginn Jr., who didn’t play), after letting a bouncing punt brush off his right knee to set up the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter, fumbled Steve Weatherford’s punt when the ball was forced out by Jacquian Williams, with Devin Thomas recovering for the Giants at the Niners’ 24 5:28 into overtime.

Six plays later, Lawrence Tynes drilled a 31-yard field goal – Weatherford picked a low snap by Zak DeOssie out of the Candlestick slop – to win it in OT, just as his 47-yard field goal four years ago beat the Packers in the NFC title game.

Manning was sacked six times and hit so many others. But he hung in there, didn’t flinch, didn’t go into a shell. He drilled a 17-yard TD pass to Mario Manningham on a third-and-15 from the 49ers’ 17 with 8:34 left that gave the Giants a 17-14 lead. “An incredible football play,” Tom Coughlin said.

Despite all the pressure, Manning didn’t turn the ball over, pretty impressive considering he threw a career-high 58 passes. He completed 32 for 316 yards and two touchdowns. Now he has the opportunity to join a pretty select group of quarterbacks who have won two Super Bowls. Big brother Peyton has not done it.

Eli Manning will be the first Giants quarterback to start in two Super Bowls and Sunday he set an NFL record with his fifth road playoff victory.

“Eli has shown toughness all year,” tackle David Diehl said. “He’s a true leader of our offense. We rally around him. The season that he’s had is unbelievable. He is playing his ‘A’ game. We’ve done everything we can to keep him upright.”

Peyton Manning has been the best thing to happen to the Colts since they moved to Indianapolis in 1984. He arrived in 1998, and his ability to make the Colts perennial Super Bowl contenders helped get Lucas Oil Stadium built. But instead of Peyton playing a Super Bowl in the stadium, it’s his little brother.

“I’m just excited to be playing in the Super Bowl,” Eli Manning said. “It doesn’t matter where we are playing it or the fact that it’s in Indianapolis.”

Peyton Manning was at Candlestick on Sunday and met with Eli after the game. His father Archie and brother Cooper were also here. “It’s what I expected him to do,” Peyton said. “I’m just proud of Eli and how well he’s played this year. He’s been awesome. He’s been clutch.”

He beat Brady in the Super Bowl four years ago by throwing the winning touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress with 35 seconds remaining. He beat Brady in Foxborough on Nov. 6 with two touchdown passes in the final 3:03. He set the NFL record with 15 touchdown passes in the fourth quarter during the regular season – breaking the record of 14 by Peyton and Johnny Unitas – and has thrown one in the fourth quarter in each of the Giants’ three playoff games. All of them to Mario Manningham.

“There’s nothing Eli hasn’t seen now in his career,” Peyton said. “It was different when he was younger and there were some things I could help him with.”

Eli has become a better clutch player than Peyton. Now he tries to win another Super Bowl, this time in his brother’s backyard.

“You are going to hear all that stuff,” Diehl said. “I block for Eli. I don’t block for Peyton, and there is nobody else I want behind me. We’re the New York Giants. We’re not the Colts and we’re going there to win this game.”

Eli Manning said over the summer that he considered himself an elite quarterback and that he was in Brady’s class. It was out of character for Manning to be bragging on himself, but if he beats Brady again in the Super Bowl, then there’s nothing to discuss anymore.

He’s just a different player this year. Maybe it’s the pressure he put on himself to back up what he said over the summer. Maybe it’s because Peyton missed the entire season after neck surgery and there weren’t the weekly comparisons. Or maybe it’s because with Hakeem Nicks, Victor Cruz and Manningham he has three explosive receivers, and with the NFL becoming a passing league, his numbers have just exploded.

But here’s the most important number: He’s two weeks away from his second ring. “Go Giants,” Peyton Manning said.

All Eli has to do is go beat Brady again.GO GIANTS!!!!!! :beerchug:

Gotta give props to Eli. I watched some NFL recap show the other night (I think it was ESPN) and one of the commentators that actually played defense in the NFL said the SF defensive front 7 were the best front 7 in the NFL this year.

Eli took a pounding but kept getting back up and completing passes. He is one tough QB.

I 100% agree. All we need from Eli is to do what hes been doing for these last 4 games.Brady Qb Rating will alway be there. But under Giants D he folds. Its sure going to be a good rematch.I guess thats what NFL fan wanted to see..

Not going for Popularity, just how I feel...

Pats 37
Giants 31

That would be an exciting game but I don't think there will be that many points scored. Giants defense is playing great and the Pats have a bend but don't break defense, they give up a lot of yards but not too many points. Looking forward to a good game.

I see the Giants winning and not because I'm a fan of either team but rather the way the Ginats have been playing the past 6 weeks.

NYG - 31
NE - 27

If anybody cares the lines are NE (-3), o/u 53.
I'll take the Giants and over.

AFC Only.
If the Fins can entice Peyton with bringing in Reggie Wayne and/or Jeff Saturday then I think it's going to happen.

The only reason I don't see Miami is they have a new coach but then again what a better way to start off than getting one of the best QB's of all time.

We still don't know if he can throw effectively - seems like there will be some type of "workout" for interested parties.

A QB like that doesn't forget how to throw. His timing may be a litt off but I'm sure he can still throw. I would say the biggest concern at this point is whether or not he can take a hit.

He physically may not have the arm strength to make the required throws. He has suffered some nerve damage that has weakened his arm. He has regained most of it, the big question is will it be enough for him to be the elite QB that he was.

I'm sure it's stronger than Chad Pennington's arm ever was.

Super Bowl Champs just cut Brandon Jacobs. It needed to be done as he was never the same after the season submarined by Plaxico Burress. He just didn't have the power and burst he used to, but it's still sad to see him go. Thanks for the memories. We'll always have LaRon Landry!

The Ross-Ireland Connection on the Fins has become the sad-sacks of the NFL. No one wants to end up in South Florida to play football.

Manning goes to Denver
Flynn goes to Seattle
Luck will get drafted by the Colts
RGIII will get drafted by the Skins

The Fins brought in Alex Smith the other day...Alex Smith?!?!?!?!?!
Tim Tebow is now being offered around the NFL by Denver...if he ends up on the Fins it will be the cruelest of jokes.

With the Mets destined for last place and the Fins already looking like a sorry team come September I might have to start taking up new hobbies...

Okay, let's hear it - opinions on Tim Tebow to the NY Jets. I'll start.

The Jets have finally replaced all of the wildcat production they lost when they did not resign Brad Smith last year. Tim Tebow will run the wildcat and be productive on that limited basis.

And the Jets new offensive coordinator - Tony Sparano - was successful with the wildcat in Miami.

So, all in all, a good addition to the Jets, but in the context of Tim Tebow replacing Brad Smith and being a wildcat supplement to Mark Sanchez, not as a replacement for Mark Sanchez.

Thoughts?

Now ESPN is reporting a snag in the Tebow trade - some sort of $5million back pay issue with his contract. Not worth it if it takes up that much salary cap room needed for other pressing needs.

I'm so glad the black hole in the NFL is no longer Buffalo!!!! :)

Really embarrassing for the Jets to overlook the "$5 million" in a trade agreement. I am surprised that the Broncos were ultimately willing to pay that, especially with other teams having interest. I think they just wanted Tebow traded as quickly as possible.
