my florescent light fixture took a dive on me the other day. i went in search of a good but cheap replacement as i don't plan on staying with this tank long term.what i found was this light at a pet supply place locally for $55.the one i bought was 48" long came with their colormax and 6700k bulbs. it lights my 55g very nicely is light weight and not bulky. the description says its for space challenged setups (ok my words) but i think it is great regardless. being as i've had it for only a couple of days i cant comment on its sturdiness or longevity but what i've seen so far would highly recommend it as a good low cost fixture.hope this helps someone out there!!!!:runnningaround:

:I_agree: totally

The only "problem" with T5's bulbs is that they do not fit into a standard fixture. You either have to purchase a new fixture designed for T5 bulbs OR you can purchase items to retro fit the T5's to your existing fixtures.

T5 bulbs are MUCH thinner and they just will not fit in a fixture that holds T8 or T12 bulbs.

But I like the T5s alot. Not as good as compact fluorescent fixtures if you need that intense light (which I do in my deep planted tanks of 90-225 gallons), but the T5s run much cooler and more energy efficient (and are typically alot less expensive). And they are low profile, so yes, the often fit in space-challenged spaces (height wise). They look sleek. I use them in conjunction with the compacts on my big planted tanks (I use ALOT of light on my tanks due to red plants and CO2, etc). For fish only tanks, just using the T5s are really good though.
