A month ago I ripped some "dead" plants (no leaves) out of my tank. The roots looked healthy so I set up a 10G in the shade on my deck and potted them in 3" terra cotta pots of flourite. Took a pic today.

The wonder of natural sunLIGHT ( NOT direct sun ). I'm doing the same project with some Anubias, Java Ferns and Cryt's. They have been in a preformed pond in my back porch for about 6 weeks ( no direct sunlight, except very late in the afternoon ). So far I see new growth on the Anubias ( not exactly fast growers ) and the others have double in growth. Oh yea, the Java moss little clump ( was about 1" around ) is now 3"............ You should take advantage of the summer months to grow plants and fish outside even if you only have a small tub to do it. You'll be surprised!!!!

funny I just setup a 29 gallon tank yesterday on my porch under the shade with some direct sunlight in the morning. I put in some driftwood, java fern and vals and will see how that goes. also in the tank are a small group of rainbows. since I cannot easily connect power to the tank I'll have no filtration and heating.

I'm throwing my dices. I just put in 35 Albino Eureka Reds and 24 Albino split Cobwe's in my back porch pond. I'll let you know the outcome at the end of August

I pondered fish, I could hook up a filter easily. But it has been plants only for the month of June. One thing I did find...tank gets VERY hot during the day and VERY cold at night. I don't think fish could have lived.

:mad2::mad2::mad2:
I found that little pot on the deck (unbroken) with plants and substrate scattered right down to the poly fiber patch that blocked the drainage hole!
The pot was at the bottom of a filled 10G tank. The tank is not damaged. Lots of 12" java ferns floating over the top. The culprit really had to want that pot particularly.
Also removed from the bottom of the tank was a 1" square rock with anubia petite rubber banded to it. Plant gone, rubber band unbroken.
One other non-aquatic deck plant was 50% dug up.
The last animal on the deck larger than an chipmunk was a bear. But I am thinking the dexterity required for this, it must have been a racoon. Haven't seen one on the property in years, but...

Oh no! At least you didn't have fish in there!
Or else your sneaky snacker could have had some sushi with the seaweed! :becky:

Re: temp swings.... yeah, always the case and depending on how big the tank/tub is, can certainly be extreme, but this is the 10th year I have had at least one tub outside, and I ALWAYS have fish outside. They adapt. And typically spawn if I have had right setting/fish mix.
Yep, raccoons are plentiful in some areas including mine, and very smart. I've even got foxes on my property that normally would like to snack, but my deck is elevated so I have not had the problems that plague other hobbyists.

My deck is elevated too, but I still have trees overhanging. I'll replant and see if I can get a usable plant by the end of the summer, sigh.

It's been 2 weeks since I put the fish in the outside tub ( aprox. 100 gals ), no filtration other tham the plants and a 8" air diffuser hook up to an air pump. I can only say that I'll have Albino Eureka reds and split gene Cobwe's for sale by the end of the summer:runnningaround:

One of the reasons I love putting fish outside in the summer.... really maintenance-free, they usually always spawn, and sometimes I can even get fish to spawn that I could not indoors. Plus the colors on them are always unbelievable. Something about the sunlight I guess and all the live food. Plus, if you do some water lettuce or a small lily, you have the benefit of blooming flowers on the surface. Just a knock out type of thing that is hands-off and very enjoyable.
Not too late to do a little tub outside if anyone is so inclined ;)

With the temperatures dropping, it is time to bring in the fish and plants from outdoors.

I did that about 3 weeks ago when suddenly the overnight temps drop to mid 60's
