View Full Version : Whatcha Trying to Breed?

Ok, so we all try something new and something a little challenging in our fishrooms. But sometimes we might challenge ourselves to that certain fish that we have never bred.
Recently for me it was WC Tropheus Yellow Murago Mikenzi.
Now I am going after breeding some WC Tropheus Kasakalawe.
One fish that I have never owned are Paracyps. I have two pair right now and my goal is to breed these.

Ok, don't be shy.
What are you trying to breed?

I WON'T reveal everything just yet, but I will name a few of them.

Tyrannochromis macrostoma/maculiceps Mbenji <---TRUE macrostoma have been rarely bred in captivity. As far as I know, they have probably never been bred in this side of the world. I have heard of people in Germany buying tank/vat raised T. macrostoma/maculiceps, and I think I have seen photos of juveniles from Japanese breeders. The good news is that the males have recently undergone a huge growth spurt (are now 7". They were 3.5-4" when I bought them in March), started showing their eggspots, and have showed interest in defending territories and fighting other males but nothing has happened yet as far as breeding. I like the way they look even non-colored, and I don't plan on giving up on these species until they breed! I plan on (after I get the smaller fish out of there) feeding krill a few times a week and their staple diet 3mm Dainichi Color Supreme Pellets, as well as live fish I have bred (currently I've been giving them 1-2" Nyassachromis boadzulu F1 juveniles every so often LOL!).

Taeniolethrinops furcicauda Chiofu Liwani <--I've had these since 2008. They were imported with a few large females (of which I bought all) and the males were all tiny (2-3.5"...this species the males are known to reach 12-15"). I did see the one huge female holding today with a huge eggtube dropped (god knows how big the eggs are!) but the male isn't colored up so I think she either dropped the eggs herself in response to the Nyassachromis breeding in the same tank or she bred with my Placidochromis sp. Jalo male (P. sp. Jalo DOES have similar adult colors to T. furcicauda...). At least now I know I have a definite male and female (looks like 2m2f, and 1 unknown). They're going to get their own 125g species tank and then later be retired to my show/breeding tank. These guys LOVE to sift sand. When I first brought them home they had a tank with gravel. They were DIGGING in the gravel. I switched them to sand and they can sift sand for hours... I hope that behavior passes on to the next aquaria-raised generation!

Lichnochromis acuticeps Malawi side of the lake:
I have a WC colony of Lichnochromis acuticeps from the Malawi coasts of the lake. These in my opinion are much nicer than the Tanzanian Lichnochromis (which is what old world breeds and what is all over the hobby at the moment). The Tanzanian variant has the males with a nearly solid teal-turqoise body color with bright red tail and anal fins. The Malawi Coast variant however is very multicolored, with a teal face, a purple and yellow and blue body, yellow-orange tail, and red anal fin. I have two full colored wildcaught males at the moment. The females are still a little too tiny to breed but by next week they are going to get their own 125g species tank and hopefully I'll see some breeding by the end of the summer.

Those are the three big ones I am working on at the moment. I have a lot more fish I am waiting on breeding/getting imported, etc.

Oh and these... This isn't a cichlid, but after seeing them in person and owning them for 10 months I just love these guys... I am going to get them their own 40g breeding tank and hope to see fry soon. I'm talking about Phyllonemus typus...one of the coolest dwarf catfish you will ever see...

Up until yesterday I was trying to get my Placidochromis Phenochilus to breed for the first time. I now have my first female holding as of last night. I have high hopes for this group of 3M/6F as I've waited a long time for them to grow out. The dominant male is really starting turn on the speckles now.

Cyathopharynx Furcifer Ruziba...it's still early for these guys but the dominant male is beginning to show really nice color. Tom's Tangs hooked me up with this really nice group.

The Enantiopus Kilesa group I bought from Sarah have doubled in size but are still a young group, so for now I'm just keeping my eye on them and continue to tell myself how lucky I was to land this awesome group.

Amongst all my fishes those are the current highlights.

Just had two successful spits from one of my "grail" fish, Astatotilapia desfontainii. Still waiting (with diminishing hopes) on the other, Divandu albimarginatus. This fall will be the 3 year mark since I started with tiny fry. I think that the (non-breeding *&^%$#@ing) pair I have may be the only ones left in this area.:mad2:

I waiting for my mbuna to start breeding. Most are very young and won't be breeding for a while. I just got them from dave's group buy.

Metriclima sp "Elongatus Usisya" mara Rocks Yellow

Tropheops sp "Elongatus Boadzulu" Kanchezda island

Psuedo. Williamsi North's from Bill

Also waiting on my ;Lemon Jake Peacocks I got from the auction. All the females have held but I think the mbuna are a too crazy for them. They all spit after a few days.

I usually buy fish small and in groups of 5-6 so I can keep my options open down the road. I have a lot of growout groups, but these are the guys that are closest to breeding (hopefully) that I haven't gotten them to do it yet.

-Protomelas spilonotus - Mara Rocks
-P. spilonotus - Tanzania
-Naevochromis chrysogaster (from Erik Dyke)
-Copadichromis mloto "Fluorescent" (smallish group that is showing a lot of action)
-Metriclima lanisticola
-Placidochromis phenochilus - Tanzania (only 4"-5", but here's to wishful thinking. lol)

Actually, the guys in my fish club always say that I am the Mermaid of the club. So I might already be a cross. :fish:

There is just one fish... I have at the moment that is pissing me OFFFFFFFFFFFFF! :mad2: :mad2: :mad2:

Everyone else seems to be able to breed them

Hint: from 'mahale' :mad2:

L-134

Waited close to 2 years and finally got a spawn July 2nd. July 5th the cave was empty and I discovered a few eggs sucked onto the sponge intake of a nearby powerhead. I saved them to a net and ended up with 1 wiggler.

Discus!

I have had many spawns from several pairs but nothing serious. Now I have a Red Spotted Leopard pair in their own breeder and I will give it a real go at it. I plan to fill my 125 with all Leopards.

Tito, if I can help you with anything, let me know. I kept discus for 9 years. Sometimes a bit of a pain to get them to start breeding, but once you do....they spawn like clock work. If they are spawning but the eggs go white, could be a number of things.... like I said, just let me know if I can help in any way.

There is something incredibly exciting about seeing discus spawn for the first time, with the little buggers eating the slime coat off the parents. ;)
It's not very common amongst fish.

Good luck with 'em!!!!

I am working on Black and Gold Occies... I heard they were easy to breed however I have had no luck at all my water parameters are spot on and water changes are done weekly at 50 percent and i also mix the fooods between nls pellet and live brine????? any suggestions?????

Chris,

My gold occies refuse to spawn in a group. I took what I observed to be a pair and put them in a 20L by themselves. Presto had fry in two weeks .

Paratroplus Menarambo......

3 males and 4 females in a 125. All fish in the 6"-8" range. I've had eggs only twice in the past 18 months, both times from the same pair. Both times the eggs fungased. I'm contemplating putting that pair alone in a 75 or 90g and seeing what happens.

W/C C. Furcifer Kigoma....In all other aspects they behave like all the others they just haven't colored up and spawned yet. I am just going to be patient and wait them out. Honestly if or when they do spawn it will simply make it more fun!

X. Papilio T2.....I believe that I have a young pair (they killed the other two) so I am keeping my fingers crossed. I have spawned wild Papilio in the past so its not new but it still challenging to get them to pair off. Fun little fish!

I should have wigglers when I get home today. Eggs in my tank ussually hatch in three days. Hopefully they'll attach and I'm on my way.
