Wondering what types of wood you can use? and what have you done to prepare it...soaking (duration), etc.

I have used rocks and wood from reservoirs. I just boiled them really well and looked at the area around where I picked them up to make sure it was 'clean'. Rocks... sometimes I just rinse... depends on where. If my husband was digging up an area 20 feet deep that hasn't been touched since the civil war or earlier... I don't' worry too much ;)
I have no idea what they were
I typically throw some cheap fish in to do a test run.

i have taken driftwood from lakes and streams, let sit outside in sun for anything to die, then bake or boil then mount to slate, and then put in bucket or tub to see if going to leach color.if not in tank it goes,i try to look for pecies that look like roots from the tree, worked great for me so far.hope that helps
