Hi, I'm new to Victorians. I know very little about them except that some of them are endangered species because of the Nile Perch being introduced to the lake as a source of food.

How different is taking care of Vics from taking care of fish from Malawi of Tanganyika? Is the pH range similar? Anything of note hard to find in the literature?

Thanks

Tom C.

I've kept Vics for years by themselves or in the same tanks as other Rift lake cichlids.
Many are extremely prolific at small sizes, even at 1.5" or so.

S10Jimmy is one of our resident Vic keepers. I'm sure he chime in.

Hey Tom, It's great to see more people getting in to these great fish ! :coool!: I don't do anything different with my Vic's . Just have ALLOT of spots for them to hide ! I hang PVC tubes in the top of the of the tank . When the sub-dominant fish get beat up they go to the top of the tank , so the PVC tubes give them a good spot to hide . They can get kind of mean when they are about to spawn , but no worse than most of the other cichlids that I've bread . There not as mean as everybody says ! What kind did ya get? And good luck with the new Vics!:becky: Here is a link to Cichlids of Victoria , another forum group that has helped me with all my Vic questions .

I've had good luck with my first Vics- except that they're not hosting my Synodontis multipunctatus like I'd hoped! :neener:

Otherwise, my Uganda Fire reds are pretty much the same as my Tangs and Malawis- hard water, plenty of territory. Except that the Ugandan Fire broods are huge compared to my other mouth brooders. :becky:

Good luck!

Jimmy, I have not got any Victorians yet. dogofwar (aka Matt) told me in a pm that he has spawned haplochromine sp. Ruby Green, an endangered vic. That is why I am researching Victorians...Matt offered to ship some fry for me but I am new to the CARES preservation program and need to learn the guidelines for hosting vulnerable or extinct in the wild species.

Thanks all for the advice and the links, It's great to know what to read and what not to read, there being so much nonsense out there when you google!
