This past Saturday I picked up Malawi Cichlids in their natural habitat 4th Edition by Ad Konings.
Really impressed.
I had assumed that the 4th edition was going to be an updated 2nd edition, but it is a whole lot more than that.
The photos are fantastic (yes, I like pictures in my books). I get caught up looking at the pictures and never get onto the reading material. With the 2nd edition I would find myself skimming thru the pages for cover to cover on a daily basis. With this 4th edition I end up stopping to look and read, and get caught up and go no further...it's going to take a long time before I find myself skimming thru this book cover to cover.
Anyone else want to share what they think about this book?
IMO, this book is not only for Malawi-keepers, but for all African Cichlid keepers.
I got one as well the other day from the group buy. It blew me away.
Despite getting two other Cichlid Press books at the same time, I haven't really cracked them yet because I've been glued to this book.
One of my favorite parts about the book is the general organization of it. It doesn't just break down fish by types (mbuna, small hap, peacock, predator, etc), it organizes the fish by their native habitat. Very cool, but will take some getting used to.
I previously owned the smaller Back to Nature guide and loved it. After getting the 4th edition, it's like night and day. His pictures and descriptions are extremely extensive. Best fish money I've spent in a while.
It is a must-have.

I bought this book a couple of weeks ago and I think that it is a great buy. I was using the 2nd edition before this. The 4th edition has a load of new info and pictures and I think that anyone who keeps Malawi fish will want to have this book. Ad Koning is the guy for Malawi and all African Cichlids and the book is really a must have in my opinion. Amazon.com had the cheapest price that I could find when I purchased mine.

Okay, you got my juices flowing now. Looks like I'll be ordering from Amazon later tonight.
The last fish books I owned I sold during a garage sale a few years back. They were very old as I had owned them for about 35 years and I had inherited them from a fellow hobbyist. That was back when all Malawi's were know as either Haplochromis or Pseudotrophis.
I still remember some of the photos in those books. Most were of wild fish taken on location and looked like they had been out of the water and in the sun for far too long. This new edition sounds like a real winner.

How can some of you guys not already own this book? It only came out two years ago...
It's a fantastic book with hundreds of new photos, nearly 200 more pages, and a whole new section on the deepwater fish and other fish that have yet to be photographed in their habitat (photos of fresh caught ones or dead ones).
It also has a small section for the non-cichlid fish, a complete Map of Malawi with all the locations, and a dedication in the front for Stuart Grant (he died about two months before the book was released in 2008 I think).
The book is fantastic and is a MUST HAVE for all Malawi cichlid keepers.
The 3rd edition is also great and worth keeping if you already own it but the 4th edition is much much much better!
Right now books on my want list next are:
The Endemic Cichlids of Madagascar, English edition
The Cichlids of Western Africa by Anton Lamboj
Malawi Cichlids from Tanzania (think it is the title) by Laif Demason
I'm still waiting for Ad to release his dvd of Malawi Cichlids Breeding Behavior... He was supposed to release it at the end of 2008, then told me he was delaying it to 2009...
If you haven't bough the book yet, get it! You can get it brand new for $52 on amazon.com with free shipping! It is COMPLETELY worth it!
The only Con/issue I have with the 4th edition copy of the book is Ad still hasn't added page numbers to the pages with fish pictures on them... It can get annoying when you are trying to find a specific page... Other than that the book is just a must have... That, and the Lake Tanganyika counterpart...

My 4th edition is getting worn out already. I've been helping out Cichlid-forum with some Profile updates.

My 4th edition is getting worn out already. I've been helping out Cichlid-forum with some Profile updates.
Their profiles are such a huge mess it'd be impossible to ever catch up... Some whole genus's that are widely available in the hobby don't even have profiles there...
I used to submit pictures and revisions to Ripple and Paul there but they rarely bothered to fix anything... I would go on with criticism but I don't want to start anything. Their website is great for novices in the hobby but to me it's useless as a tool...I'd rather crack open my books or go on forums if I need information...
I second that about the book though! Some pages are starting to get loose...
And what's funny...and I can't seem to figure out why...the mbuna section is so stiff and tough to turn the pages and stuff yet the haplochromine and peacock sections are soo loose... I wonder why... LOL

"How can some of you guys not already own this book? It only came out two years ago..." :neener:
The 3rd is excellent & the CD is nice because it has so many other pictures available on it. Just the additional afra variant pics were worth the price to me.
The 4th is more refined and has better/more current info on classifications. i was sad to lose Cyno sp Mbweca but gained quite a few others so it was a net gain:beerchug:
Looking at old books is next to worthless .......Pool your money, pay for Ad to come for a presentation & he'll bring discounted books to sell...you get to spend time with Ad & get the book for the same price as Amazon.com books!!!!

Also for those of you that do not know: On Amazon.com in the search box you can type in the ISBN number of a book or the UPC code (both are the bar code numbers/catalog numbers) and it will automatically pull up the matching product they have for sale.
For example, on amazon.com you can type in 978-1-932892-05-5 which is the ISBN number for Ad Koning's Malawi Cichlids in their Natural Habitat 4th Edition book and it will come up. You can find the ISBN numbers from the publisher, from copies of the book at stores or that you or a friend owns, etc. I found that ISBN number on cichlidpress.com here: http://cichlidpress.com/books/details/malawi4th.htm
That's a VERY useful feature to use if you want to buy a specific edition of a book or dvd or Music CD.

So, are there any others here who have picked up the Bible of Malawi's?
Again I will say, this is the MUST-HAVE book when it comes to Malawi's.

I have the 3rd edition for awhile I picked it up at an O.C.A. convention, with the CD , I still use it alot, I agree it is nice with the pictures in the book because it fills out the description very nicely.
The CD is for XP and I no longer use XP so I can't use the CD any more I almost picked up the 4th at ACA.
Ad's "Tangyanikan Cichlids in there Natural Habitat" which is similiar is also a fantastic resource to own.

Does anyone know where to get it for less than 75? I know its worth it, but im frugal, (cough, cough cheap). Sounds like a good refrence and worth having as I move into nicer species.

I don't think Ad even did a 3rd edition yet for the tanganyika book. I think the current one available is still just the 2nd edition.
