Back in January the family decided to go to Disney world in Florida. Me the wife and the 2 boys plus 4 other family members. Just us 4 the plain fare was $280 round trip each=$1,120. If it was just me and the wife we would of flew but we looked into other means to save some money so that we could stay at a nice hotel and enjoy most of the parks.
Well imma cut this as short as possible and include most details.Amtrak was our choice adult ticket price $234 and children were $116 and my 2year old was free as long as he sat on our lap which made it $350 round trip for the 4 of us.
Fist of all the seats were much roomier that a plain, wider and much more leg room that i was expecting. You could lean the seat twice as far back as the plain and the seats had leg rests that fliped up like a livingroom chair:coool!:
Driving was a alternate but after driving 21 hours we would of been burnt out and the gas and tolls would of made it not worth it for us.It took 21 hours but we sleept ate and brought the lab top for the kids to watch movies and didnt have to worrie about pulling over to rest or stopping for gas .
I would say it was forth loosing a day in travel vs paying the plain fair and beeing their in 3 hours and saving $770 too spend on the hotel and rental car.
sorry for the long story but just trying to pass along some saving to my fish buddies =the more we save the more we have to spend on ther things:whistle:

Thanx for sharing your story. I have to agree with you on saving the money for other more important things like the hotel and parks. Sounds like you had a great time, next time you should look into getting a sleeper instead.

thanks Richard, we were able to do more more by sacrificing taking the long train ride and not fly in in 3 hours which would of been great. But it was worth it and not as bad as i thought it was gonna be.

I've never ridden amtrak before but I've never heard bad things about them...

My dad used to drive Amtrak trains too among others. We used to get free trips on NJ Transit and one other rail company and discounts on Amtrak.

My daughter takes the amtrak train to Washington, DC while attending George Washington University. She says the ride isn't bad. Fares vary depending on departure date and advanced booking.
