I am setting up an Eheim 2227 wet-dry, and I am wondering if anyone here is using it.
Looks like I will need 4 litres of EHFISUBSTRAT, a filter pad above that and for the first few weeks a prefilter.

Anyone here using this Wet-Dry?

That's a great filter, I bought mine in 94' and used it for 12 uninterrupted years.
Your only supposed to use Ehfisubstrat, no filter pad or anything else.
I put a very thin layer of Ehfimech ontop of the Ehfisubstrat in the top basket.
That prevents a depression from forming in the Ehfisubstrat, where the water enters, and also distributes the water more evenly.

The prefilter is just a coarse sponge slipped over the strainer on the siphon tube. If it's a "new" tank, I would run the sponge on an established tank for a while first. That should really jump-start the filter when you deploy it.

Note: The filter works by filling and then emptying quickly. The media must allow water to pass through it very quickly or it will stall. A filter pad will definitely slow the water too much once it traps a little waste. Stick with the Ehfisubstrat and if you use anything else make sure it is as coarse or more coarse than Ehfisubstrat.

Bill, I could give you some of my old underware. It's already seeded & has plenty of holes for water movement !!!!!!!!:grhair:

Thanks, Spooky.
It's going onto my already established 125g.

Bill,

Check out Petsmart. I found the EHFISUBSTRAT there. THey never sold any and were getting rid of it. I got a 5 lb box for $5.00. I laughed all the way home. I have the 2329, unfortunatly its not working now, the float wont seal against teh botto, so no wet/dry function.
