In a large enough tank, discus can be kept with angelfish. As far as what other CA and SA cichlids can be kept together, a lot of it depends on the size of the tank and the set up. Much of it is trial and error. Some of the bigger cichlids do not tolerate other tankmates.

Angels are compatible, however i have heard and seen that the waste created by angels may cause hole in the head disease to a discus.

All fish have their own personalities as strange as it may sound. Not all red festae, or Jack Dempsey are HOLY TERRORS ( no pun intended). Just as not all pitbull terriers are blood thirsty killers. This is evident in the varying stories you hear. Like hearing of feeder goldfish living with oscars or on the other hand psychotic killer angelfish rampaging and killing everything in the tank:croc:. Experiences and stories vary from keeper to keeper and tank to tank.
Are they compatible? Possibly -Yes. As joe_jaskot stated:

I would not keep them together personally. I don't like keeping angelfish at the temps Discus require.

My 2 cents:
"CAN" angels and discus be kept together? Yes.
SHOULD they be? No
Why: There are really numerous reasons, but I would say the #1 is that angels are very, very aggressive eaters, and discus are not. I never kept mine together.
If kept together, you will see your angels grow bigger, and but not much growth in the discus. Angels will outcompete the discus for food every time. Plus, discus can be kinda weird. I have heard of them 'learning' a behavior and it just sticks with them. Like, say the angels push the discus out of the way to get the food. That happens day after day. The discus start to learn that. So then you take the angels out, thinking the discus will now gobble up the food asap. But they don't. They have "learned" to hang back when food shows up. I have heard that from lots of fellow discus keepers who kept them together and then removed the angels later. They still act like the angels are in the tank.
Sorta like Pavlov's dogs.
