Took my niece to Petsmart yesterday for a gold fish and this is how the conversation went:

Petsmart rep: What size tank do you have?
Us: 30g
Petsmart rep: What kind of fish is in there and how many?
Us: Only 1 gold fish
Petsmart rep: Ok, you can only get 1 more gold fish than the tank is full
Us: (scratching head)

Anyhow, we didn't argue with them just took the fish and left. As long as my niece was happy than I'm happy. There's could only be two reason's why she said this. One, she is just damn LAZY of catching fish and didn't want to spend time helping a customer or she is just an ASS! I mean, I use to tell my employee's if you don't want to work or be here than "GO HOME". I just don't undstand how people get highered these days, especially when there are people out there desperately looking for jobs.

Man, the nerve (only 2 gold fish in a 30g) than why the hell do they have 20+ gold fish in a 20g holding tank.

The employee was partially correct. A 30 gallon tank is not that large for a goldfish. Two adult orandas would probably be a little cramped in a 30. Goldfish produce a lot of waste and are much more suited to a pond rather than a fish tank. A 30 gallon tank could hold quite a few small sized goldfish, but goldfish do grow quickly.

Wow. I'm impressed the Petsmart employee gave you good advice.

for a (2) 2 inch gold fish? WOWTwo 2" goldfish under the proper conditions can become two 4" goldfish in a year. Goldfish growth is determined by genetics, tank size, food quality, amount of times fed per day and water changes. Many goldfish will grow to 7-8". Others such as the wakin goldfish can grow to 12-14". Since goldfish are in the carp family, they will continue to grow all their lives.

It's not about the size the fish is when it's young. It's about the size it can/should be able to grow to and the amount of waste it will put out.

Their goldfish may stay in that tank with 20+ others for what, a week tops? Unless you have owned a store it's hard to explain why they tell you 2 goldies in a 30 but keep many more in their tanks. It's called "maxamizing space" While the fish you bought may spend it's entire life in that tank the store turns these fish over VERY quickly. I commend the store worker myself for being honest.

Long term? This is a 5 year old girl :becky: I highly doubt she knows what long term is. If gold fish die you get more :). I believe 4-5 will be ok in a 30g as along as water changes are done weekly. Once kids get bored of it than it gets broken down as a fry tank:becky:.

Are these the common feeder type goldfish or the fancy kind? I would not waste money on five fancy types for a 30g tank. That is way too may fish.

If they are the feeder types just get new smaller ones if they get too large.
I would have a good filter and perform twice a week water changes. Careful not to overfeed as they will crap all over the bottom of the tank.

(Note to self: Do not make this into another fish feces thread. The floating frontosa turds and green poop threads are enough for now.) :becky:

May sound weird but i started with fish at the tender age of 6 and didn't stop till the tender age of 60+. So if she has the fortune of having a GOOD experience with these fish she may outlast you in fish keeping. :neener:

I'm trying not to be harsh, but...

Keeping fish in poor conditions because you believe they will die anyway doesn't give you much room to criticize the store employee. :croc: If you are looking for a disposable pet, perhaps something without a central nervous system would be better. :becky:

I don't think in my post I've "mentioned" that I will keep them them in poor conditions. If you read my post again, I mention that with proper water change I believe 4-5 at 2 inches should be ok for time being but not long term. Keeping in poor conditions is your thoughts correct? Sorry just had to clear that up before someone decides to not read the tread completely and adds a comment that doesn't help the tread and eventually becoming a BASHING tread. And yes all fish do die eventually. Anyhow, gold fish are a waste of space now that I have found out that (2) 2inch is limited in the "long run". Thanks for all your input on gold fish. I don't have interest in them besides my niece.

My first serious tank was a 55gal with goldfish, so I am biased. It is not my intention to bash anyone, but a few things in this thread raised my eyebrows, and so I felt a need to put in my $0.02.

I was in a Petsmart today to pick up stuff for the pooch.
The feeder goldfish are crammed in three tanks as one would expect. The fancy goldfish were not overly crowded.
Everything is on a Central system. I hope they have at least two systems going, one for the cold water fish and one for tropical.
