I might be getting another 6ft tank. I need a over and under stand to hold both tanks. I was looking on home depots website and found the angle iron industrial storage shelves. Does anyone know if they make a 6ft long by 18" wide stand?

Mike, you're asking the right person.
Home Depot has some great stands. I am currently using one to house a 40g long on top and a 55g on the bottom.
I believe the 6' stand that you need is about $134...give or take a few bucks. Do not use the pressed board that comes with it.
3/4" plywood cut correctly would fit on this stand perfectly. Birch would even be better as it has a smooth texture to it.

This is the $134 stand Bill is talking about. Here it is holding 2 125's

Spooky did you replace the wood like bill said? The total coats with the wood is going to be around $200. Might be cheaper to have a wood stand built

Bill do they make them 18 inches wide or only 24 inches wide?

Mike, I do not recall.

The rack is 18" wide

I used the particle board that came with it, but the tank actually sits on the steel cross pieces so you can probably just leave the particle board out. When I used the rack for 40's one of the pieces of particle board did get wet and very ugly.

Yes, it certainly will be much cheaper to make it out of wood. My wood racks that hold 33 40gal tanks cost me less than $200 each for the wood, glue and screws. I think the paint pushed it over the $200 mark.
You can probably make it out of wood for $30-$40 with 2"x4"s and 2"x3"s.
Despite the way it looks, my wood racks are much sturdier than this metal rack.
This is the only stand in my room that moves if you bump into it...I'm going to secure it to a joist to make it more stable.
I'm not knocking the rack, it is very good and easy to work with. If I get a 4th 125gal I may buy another one myself.
If you decide to make the rack out of wood, you can make it here and I will help you. I basically have a rack-building shop next to my fishroom. We can build it here and you can take the pieces home and assemble it in place.

Spooky I might have to take you on your offer. How bad does the metal stands sway when you bump into them?

A bunch if you hit it hard enough.
It goes together with gravity, not fasteners, so it's not super rigid.
It is a very strong design for static loads.
If it were not at the end of an aisle, I would not bother tying it into a joist.

Hey spooky are you sure you got that stand at home depot. I went to two home depots today. They both said they don't carry the stand in the 6 foot version. I also checked there website and did not find it listed. I went to lowes they had the 6 foot version but 24 inches wide with a max capacity of 1500lbs per shelf. Do you think that is enough support to hold a 150 gallon tank?

Mike, the Home Depots down by me ALL have the 6' stands.

Being that the shelf only holds 1500lbs and the 150 gallon tank filled with water weighs 1800 pounds. Do you guys think it is safe to get the home depot stand. Put the 150 on the bottom with 2x4 or 4x4 supports under the shelf for extra support?

The 6' HD stand holds about 4000 lbs.

I need to see the specifications. I have been looking online. All of the 6 foot shelves that are similar to the home depots stands hold 750 lbs per shelf beam. Which is 1500lbs per shelf

If they hold 1500lbs then they are NOT similar to HD's stands.

The total capacity of the stand I am talking about is 4500 pounds. Which breaks down to 1500 per shelf

I am thinking of getting the industrial storage rack similar to the home depot stands. The shelves only hold 1500 pounds each. I am planning on putting the 125 gallon on top and the 150 on the bottom. The weight of the 150 gallon is 1800 pounds filled. Do you think if I put 4x4 vertical braces from the floor to the bottom of them shelf for extra support. Do you think the stand can hold the weight? The stand is designed to hold 4500 pounds but 1500 pounds per shelf. If not I am going to try and build a double stand out of 2x6 wood

If I were to purchase this type of stand ( I already own one that is 4' long) then I would only utilize two shelves.
This way you could placed one 6' tank on each shelf.
As originally stated I would purchase birch board and, with a perfect cut, place it inside the grooves instead of the particle board that it comes with.

I am only going to use two shelves. The problem is the 150 exceed the weight capacity of the shelf by 300 pounds.

I believe the weight amount is for the entire unit...not broken up per shelf.

Every unit I checked states equally distributed. I aslo went to a couple of home depots in the bronx. They do not carry the stand in 6ft. I went to lowes they have a similar stand. It holds the same amount of weight. On the box it states max weight of 1500 pounds per shelf with a max capacity of 4500 pounds total.

I checked the stands that we received.
Z Beam
7500 lbs
Three tier.
Now, there is no way of getting three 125g's on this stand, that because of the lack of height. Getting two 125g's on this stand would work.
$140 for the stand.
$70 for two pieces of birch board.
Instant stand.

I checked numerous home depots in new york. Three in the bronx one in broolyn and two in staten island. All of them did not carry the 6 foot version of the stands. They actually said they are discontinued. I built a stand out of 2"x6" wood. I will take pictures of it on sunday. Total cost of wood and screws $65

Bill, thanks for all of your help. I kept on getting the run around at the home depots in my neighborhood. It is also much cheaper to build it myself. I enjoyed the experience. There is nothing like cutting wood in the snow.

I took a quick picture of the DIY stand I made out of 2x6. The bottom tank is a 150 gallon high and the top tank is a 125 gallon tank. The room the tanks are in is only 7 feet wide.

The tanks are going to be moved to another wall in march. My dad wants to rearrange his basment. I am thinking of painting the back round black.
