Who keeps these and how do u keep them from killing one another. I have a group of 12 in a 55 and these are the most evil fish I have ever kept. They really don't leave one another alone. I have had to remove some due to this. How do you guys do it? I am getting to the point where I am gonna seperate them all to different tanks. Any idead or help would be appeciated. I have kept some nasty guys before but these guys are relentless.

I've had up to a hundred 2" at a time in a 75. They seem to do better with at least 30 fish in a tank that size. If a fish ever needed to be crowded to even out the abuse this is it. You cant even get rid of bad egg's because they're all bad eggs. Remember previous group for sale video's they are all have huge colonies for a reason.

I remove a sub-dom male a couple of times a year, which is a pain, but I love them.

Mike, what is the m/f ratio?
Sounds like you need more Demasoni in there.

I think its about even at the moment. I need more females for sure. The dom male has been mating the last couple of days and has been a terror. He hasan't beat any one up yet but all the other males are hiding up top at the moment.

I had 12 in a 55 and in about 6 months I was down to one. The more I read about them I am going to try 30 or more in it.

And then after all your trouble you get like 5 fry at a time. It's like dying twice.

My females were spitting out about 25 fry at a time.
Mike, if you give up (and you shouldn't) there is always a home for them on the Jersey Shore...along with your Flavus.:thumb3d:

Chris I got 3 batches so far. The first one was small but the last 2 were nice. I have about 30 growing out.

Mike add A LOT MORE. As far as Bill's offer of having your fish live on the JOIZEE SHAW :cold::cold: I believe it's a bad idea. I think they should reside on the North Shore of Long Island preferably near the LIE in Roslyn !!!!!!!!!!!:jump: Good luck !!!!!!!!!!

I picked up 25 about 2 months ago.....and maybe it's because mine are relatively small, in the 1"-2" range, but the group seems pretty non aggressive. They are in a 55 with 30 similar-sized bi-500 peacocks.
hope i didnt just jinx myself.

Hah! Wait until the males hit 3". That's how they lull you into a false sense of security!
Simple solution: 6' tank. My past groups were never more than 8 fish and with lots of rock in a 6' tank each male can claim his zone without resorting to extermination of the others.

I had them in a 6' tank for two years. Always had 20 or more Demasoni however.

If you simply want to breed these fish and do not care about the tank's aesthetics, do not use any rockwork.
I picked up a lot of 25 from Wayne Wilson when they first appeared on the scene and placed them in a tank with mondo rockwork. They did spawn occasionally but there was a lot of nipping and chasing. It was a pain to catch the females as I had to move all the rock around.
I then tried a bare tank. No territories to defend and they did spawn readily. And it was easy to catch the females!

Mike ,I had 25 dems in a 90 gallon and never lost one.The more you have the better with these guys, with a big amount they get so frenzied ,nobody knows who's chasing who:)
I have a colony of 40 myself and as previously commented, the more in the colony the better. I dress my tank with heaps of rock and also lots of small rock for when the females spit. Gives the little tackers somewhere to hide. I would have to agree that they are one of the nastiest little Malawi's around but also one of the best looking. Sounds like you definately need more females. Best of luck.

after reading this thread, i would probally start with no less than 25 and make adjustments as needed.

Given all the other fish you are stocking TrashmanNYC, 15 would be good. 20 would be OK if you plan on removing a couple sub-dom males eventually. Unless you want to drop some other species.

When your buying them just buy the smallest one's if they are all the same age. With that method you'll probably get 2/3 females for sure. If not better. Another bonus is the males you do get will also take a little longer to get super aggressive and that will give the fems more time to grow before they start breeding.

I forgot to count when I moved them from 125G to 75G Thanksgiving. Probably 20. I did not downsize this group when I moved them. 25% are immature, and it's only been a week or two...can't tell how they will do. There is still one victim fish even though I removed 3 that were a little tattered.
I also have newborn fry from 2 Moms so I'll raise them and try to get more nice females.

I'm not sure that adding more females is the solution to reducing aggression. In my colony of 25,there is about 80% male.It seemed to me that this spread out the aggression amongst the males, where as if there had been 80% females there would have been a blood bath between the few males,no?. Like I said,I never lost a one.

I agree. I kept 12 in a 33 long for about 4 years. It was basically a bare tank. I would put one clay pot in there and nothing else for them to claim. Over the 4 years I sold approx 2000 of the fry between the local auctions and the local stores. They paid for 1/2 the tanks in my fish room. At one time I had the fish in 6 local fish stores and still had 600 of them at 1.5-2 inches. Flooded the market around here. lol
I finally got rid of the group a month ago.
