IF Anyone out there has bred them can you please share with me how long before females actually spit. Is it similar to tropheus species. I have a female swimming around with a mouthful. I have a group of 8 red mobas in the tank and tropheus with them. I really dont want to strip her but I also don't want to lose them to a food frenzy.
I noticed this pass couple of days two of them where going around in circles and circles for a good couple of minutes it was awesome!!!!!! Finally after giveing them a turn from years of not being able to keep them alive. They are breeding.lol........... Any info on these guys would be great...... I know this time around I took my time settleing them in and not rushing it helped me out. GOBYS for the Auction.:a-okhand:

Kev, I believe that the female holds the eggs for about 2 weeks, then she spits the egg sacks into the males mouth and he has them for another 2 weeks. The male is the fish that ultimately spits out the fry.
As for stripping...
I believe that this is a species that stripping is not recommended.

Ray Tighe, the official dentist of the Alishan Aquarium Society and NJAS member has bred one of the goby cichlids. I think it was Eretmodus. I will contact him and try to get him to sign on.

He is usually busy extracting money from his patients wallets.....:)

Kev, from what I have read pulling the holding male and placing him into another tank all on his own is the best bet.

UPDATE, today I noticed another goby holding... :hyper::hyper: Well Not sure who the hell is a male and female now that I know both species pass off the eggs. They passed off on a slate rock last night, I thought that was cool as hell. Good call Bill. I tell you one thing they are both swimming around with mouthfulls...... I will get batteries def for my bootleg camera and try to get some good shots....
This group of 8 is also schooling like tropheus and they follow the tropheus is this odd behaviour I wonder for gobys. I heard these guys do bond forming pairs only? I tell you one thing either the male or female gonna have to spit those babies out when I yolk them up.lol..................:flaming:

Hey Kevin, Congrats. Mine spawned twice successfully. Each time the female had the eggs for approx. 10 days then she would pass them to the father. From that point on, I would count the days. On the 10th day after the male held, I would strip him. Hope that helps.
You should watch how the female passes the eggs to the male - it is very interesting.
If the tank is relatively calm, more eggs the female can pass successfully o the male. My male dropped quite a few eggs in the second spawn as busy trophs constantly interrupted the ritual. Boy, was the female pissed. That was probably the only time I saw the aggressor's role reversed.

I found that they pass them after 11 days. You can strip them but it can be tough with their teeth. I have an article around some where. ray t the dentist

This might be too late... but I found that it best to strip them as even the male will eat the fry only minutes after spitting. It's not that hard... a bit hard the first time but after you get used to handling small fish and stripping it isn't too much of an issue. The trick is to get the mouth open wide enough so the teeth aren't an issue... but not too wide that you hurt their "jaw".
