hi guys,

i would like to seek your expert opinion on my victorian. i was so excited when i saw this fish that i didn't bother to look or ask for the name. i was a cichlid newbie back then. please tell me what kind it is. i am attaching a picture, its color in the picture is when he is mellow. his colors are an explosion of red, yellows, black and green when he's excited. i am torn between haplochromis obliquedens and pundamilla nyerei(hope i spelled them right). i bought a pair but happened to be both males.

thanks,
ray

From the Cichlid Forum profiles, it looks to be Haplochromis sp. "thick skin" aka Hap. sp. 44, Hap sp. Red Tail, obliquedens.

A similar species Astatotilapia latifasciata, does not appear to have the red coloration in dorsal and caudal fins as the "thick skin".

That's Astatotilapia sp. '44', commonly sold as Haplochromis obliquidens. Tom is right with the identification and profile link http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=1546

Nice species though. Not rare at all but definitely colorful...

Here's a pic from Daves Fish:

Pundamilia nyererei look like this (not all locations but most do) when in breeding or dominant dress:

Thanks for posting the links and the pictures. Based from the pictures itself, I'm convinced that what I have is just an obliq. Now, anybody got some females? (better post this in the wanted section). I appreciate the responses, guys!

I think either Artie or mack74 breeds them. For some reason I am thinking that I saw one of them posted fry for sale...

Can you take a photo of your fish when it is fully colored up?

sp 44s can color 2 different ways here are 2 of mine. I find the darker ones are more rare. I get maybe one a batch.

NICE! I had no idea that can occur with sp. 44s. Just gives me more reason to go ahead and keep them again LOL.
