Just wondering if anybody has ever kept them before and with cichlids?
From what I search online they are peaceful giants, colorful ones too, and get a long with African cichlids fine. I was thinking of having one or two specimens in my 7ft 265g tank with the haplochromines from Malawi.
What do you guys think? I have thought of a single Leporinus sp. but I am told they are nasty as hell whereas Distichodus at the most would bother their own species and fry...

Distichodus tend to get nastier as they get older. I'd put them in the same category as Leporinus in terms of biting other fish.
I think lussoso gets to like 2 feet and sexfasciatus to only 1 and a half.
Prochilodus are more gentle giant-ish...

Fairly new on here, also a member of cichlid-forum and nycichlids. Don't usually have the time to post but try to check in weekly. Just curious to see if you decided to add one of these guys and wanted to share my experience. Both grow over a foot long and can become quite feisty as they get larger. I added two sexfasciatus that were about 2-2.5 inches to a 180 community tank years ago. One killed the other within a day. That was a tank that had many rocks, plants and driftwood in it but the one fish tirelessly harassed the other. I would definitely add just one. My fish thought he was a tiger barb at that size and would swim with the school. Never saw any aggression towards other fish as a juvenile. He quickly grew to 10 inches after a couple years and became the tank boss. Had quite a personality for a characin. He never did any real damage to any other fish but would chase my Bala sharks and all the fish steered clear of him. I would think he would be a good fit with your Haps. Not too aggressive but definitely not a pushover either. I read that they tend to lose their color as they got larger but mine was still great looking. He loved krill and any type of vegetable matter. Hope this helps, Jim
