I'm impressed with the threads in this topic so far! Great work. I've been hustling to finish the details and the stocking of this 9' rack w/ 3-40BR, 2-75, 3-30L. Just about had it all together then switched a 75 from mbuna to haps....changed out gravel to sand.......the fun never stops LOL!

This is where I was a couple of months ago

Great fishroom Nick. The racks are akin to Spud's fishroom. Nice clean lines.

Where did you pick up the racks?

Real sharp room there. You seem to have quite the mix of filters going on there too

I'm a scavenger of the first order--the unistrut was over-ordered and somehow ended up at my house. That's also why the mix of filters--some are rebuilds from parts of units people were trashing. I'm in awe of Spud & Spooky's set-ups--they keep raising the bar!

This is what rack #4 looks like today

If I hadn't have 'lucked' into the unistrut, I would have continued using the ol' 2x4 racks. I think this one cost about $30 to build. I generally can get my hands on stuff that isn't available to everybody--like the fancy ball valves & flow controls on the airlines and the 1/2" thick lexan for the DIY tops. That access to materials can make ALL the difference.

Trying out this new wide angle gadget--doesn't really seem to help in the close confines of my small fishroom. This is the middle section of the room

nice fish room indeed. i am just wondering how you deal with humidity? do you have a fan to blow the air to the outside or some kind of dehumidifier? also how do you keep your electrical cost down? my 125g in the basement cost about $50/month electricity alone even though it's well insulated.

In the spring & fall, I move back the limit switch on the big garage door's electric opener so that I have about 3" of gap at the bottom & top. With a coupla fans, that cycles enough air to keep the humidity levels reasonable(anything less than 60% is ok with me).

I use a small window AC unit in the summer to keep the temp/humidity down.

Because of the extra time and little bit of extra $ spent to fully insulate the room, a small dehumidifier not only keeps the humidity down but actually provides enough heat for the entire room during the winter.

The biggest cost IME is individual heaters in tanks--(I don't use any)

300 watts per one heater = almost 10 48" T8 light bulbs @ 32 watts each

Not sure offhand about the usage of the AC or dehum'r but besides them and lights, my next biggest consumer is the 75 watts for the linear piston air pump, then the pumps on the Eheim 2250s (about 50 watts). Xp3's are around 30 watt and the various sizes of HOBs are ballpark average of 10 watts--so you can see if you stay away from internal heaters the cost is not that high. I think the entire fishroom costs about the same as your 125, around $50-60 a month for electricity.

Thanks for the long write up. I am thinking about sealing off an area of the basement and was wondering about the cost savings. It would be cost prohibitive for me to add tanks for $50/month each.

I've always loved the Mbuna! Started getting into Vics, then Malawi haps & peacocks, then Westie riverines and now I've got plans for my first Tang tank and have a serious hankering for some SAs---it's all good :hyper:
