driftwood

when I went to the Hidden Reef (FIsh store), they had two types of driftwood, one was regular with points, the other was more rounded with no sharp edges....what is the difference? i want to put a piece in my tank for the ABN plecos...what do I have to do to remove the tanins and prevent it from affecting my PH? Thanks

Sam, to release most tanins this is what I have done...

Soak in boiling water.
The kills anything that could be on the wood.
After about 10 minutes pull the wood out and place in cold water...soak over night.
Repeat these two procedures twice more.

When you place the driftwood in the tank I would add carbon to the filtration...the will help clear the water from any remaining tanins.
