Got a nice large batch of pink eggs from a breeding pair of P. Menarambo last night. The eggs are attached to a large piece of slate. I'd like to grow them out:

1. Remove the slate/eggs and put them in their own tank with a seeded sponge filter and water from the main tank
2. Put the eggs in a tumbler
3. leave the eggs where they are

Also, do I need to jack the temp up into the mid 80s? feedback appreciated.
I will post pics later tonight if possible.

Nice Gregga. Why not send Lou or John an email and get their opinions? They are the only two that I know who have successfully spawned and reared these fish.
They do suggest raising the temp for growing up fry. I believe up in the high 80's / low 90's.

That's awesome! How big are the parents and is that a species tank? From what I hear on topics on other forums of people breeding Paretroplus is that they typically eat the eggs if there are other fish in the tank....talk about being a primitive species .

yup, they were in a species tank with one kuhli loach that I havent seen in weeks, but know is in there. The male menarambo is 6.5"-7" and the female is 6"-6.5". Each is the largest of their respective genders.
48 hours in and eggs are still pink....

I'd keep an eye on the lookout for the loach... I've heard of people having their eggs or fry disappear since supposedly in Madagascar there aren't any bottom scavengers like loaches in the cichlid's habitats... Not sure if that's true or not...

no worries....I put the eggs in a separate tank to incubate (see pics above)

Gregga - we know that you are heading south to visit a big black mouse in a couple of weeks. Is there smoebody who can look after your fry while you're away?

Poop!
Came home from work tonight to find the eggs with a light fungus over them. Temp was 82-83, meth blue in the water, 2 sponge filters and an airstone running. Disappointing because it was almost 4 days. Next time I'm gonna leave the eggs with the parents for an extra day or so because I'm wondering if I didn't have enough current/oxygen going over the eggs?

Yeah next time you may want to add another small powerhead or add more air stones. I'd also consider raising the temperature. Someone on this forum just got the book The Endemic Cichlids of Madagascar I'll send him a PM to see if he can look and see what temperature the water is there during breeding season.

thank you.....I've been in constant contact with lou rovner, arguably the most successful breeder of these fish in the country...I know this hobby has many disappointments, but this one really sucks...the only good thing is now I know I have a breeding pair and I should get more opportunities.

alish...I do have a neighbor who was gonna help with the fry if it came to that.....thank you
