Hey guys I got a 55 gallon planted aquarium, which I've built custom territories for my fish, but I'm worried it might be too crowded to add another cichlid. I'd like some insight on what you guys think.

All the fish are below 3 inches including the algae eaters

Electric Blue Jack Dempsey x1 (largest one in tank female about 4in)
Firemouth x1 (male)
Managuense x1 (male)
Kribensis x2 (Juveniles both males)

Giant danio x5 (essentially my dither fish)
Chinese algae eater x2
Pleco x1

I haven't had too much of an issue with aggression after I moved a convict pair completely out of the aquarium in a separate 20gallon when they were breeding, I know that the Managuense will be a tank buster later on, but should I remove anything currently if I'm expecting to keep this for the long term? and/or would it be recommended if I added one more cichlid to the tank?

The jag is going to be a problem. Any small fish will be in danger on being eaten. Your kribs, danios and chine algae eater will be snacks eventually. If you want to add a cichlid after the jag is gone I would add a female firemouth.

I think a pair of rainbows could work well. Generally Jack Dempseys would be too aggressive, but I have heard the EBJDs are less aggressive.

I really need some color in my tank, any other recommendations if I replace the jag. and/or feedback about the tank?

A festae will get too large . Same probelm as the jag. Stay away from fish that get larger than 8 inches or so.

any recommended species? Cost isn't too much of an issue I just feel like I need some color in this tank, but I'd rather not go hunting for a xanthic cihlid

Add an Electric Blue Jack Dempsey Male for the Female. I have a soft spot for them.

But, I feel your tank is too small for the fish you like.

I think putting any females into a 55 with the other fish would lead to all out war. What about electric blue rams? Nice color and stay small. Rainbows as dithers/targets would be cool too.

How about Salvini? Great yellows and reds and would probably work. An over looked reasonably priced fish.

They are pretty but mean. A pair would cause mayhem. A single one would probably be too aggressive for the kribs, but it could work as a substitution for the manguese if the kribs were replaced also.

I think Rainbows could be a good choice for the dither fish and they could give you the color you are hoping for.

I think firemouths and the EBJD might be a little rough for the Rams.

I had a salvanni in there couple days ago, but i ended up returning him because surprisingly the firemouth kept pushing him towards my JD and it was mayhem. (I might just leave it as is)

problem is i can't find any rainbows at my LFS or anyone around my area that have the size I need :(

anyone kept these before? Hypsophrys nicaraguensis (nicaragua cichlid)

they look nice but i think they might be too peaceful
