I know somebody has tried this.

My daughters boyfriend works for a place that installs granite counter tops. He can get me a lot of very colorful scraps to use for aquascaping in my tanks.

These have all been pre-sealed and are safe for humans but would they be toxic to fish.

Let me know your thoughts.

As a general rule, surface sealants for food preparation materials are safe for fish. Once cured they became inert. IMO they would be fine.
Ask if they use any waxes or polishers besides the sealant.
For piece of mind, use it first in a tank with disposable fish.

First let me say im not a big fan of calling any fish or any other living thing disposable:mad2:

now to the stone. If i remember this right granite will raise you PH.So if its going in a African tank it should be good.I agree that if the sealant is food safe it should be fish safe

I have granite pieces in my tank that were from a table top that was busted up in larger pieces in my garden when I bought my house. I broke them down into variuos smaller pieces and stacked them with round rock to make caves and such. when it's under water the colors really come out in it. I think it's a good idea.

Let me know your thoughts.John, when I posted a thread about aquascaping my Kilesa tank, Matt responded about using pieces of granite stones in his tank. You can ask your buddy but here's the thread - http://forums.eastcoastcichlids.org/showthread.php?t=8841.

IME, I made caves out of pre-sealed granite tile scraps for my plecos and a year later, they are still ok. The abns are breeding like wabbits...:becky: I like the look and color of granite caves, btw. They look so natural in the tank.

Disposable fish as feeders, bait fish, etc. Also pond snails, MTS, in essence any living pest.
Maybe I should have been more PC'd and call them sacrificial fish. You know, the ones that people keep in their tanks, hoping they don't kill them because of the lack or in spike of their skill set.

As being scrap I'm guessing not all sides are sealed

Granite is inert, it will not raise your pH.
